This North West Trade Gun will be ideal for your fur trade impression. Stocked in maple, this North West Trade Gun is correctly fitted with traditional trade gun hardware, a mixture of brass and iron. This 24 gauge flint fowling gun is fully qualified for use in the NMLRA North West Trade Gun match, using patched round balls at paper targets, and bird shot at clay birds on the trap range. This trade gun is offered in used condition, with a bright clean bore. We note that the trigger can overpower the half-cock notch. This trade gun was also decorated with tacks, that have been removed, and the hole and ring marks are still visible in the stock. Trigger reach is 13-1/2" to fit today's average size shooter and weight is 7.8 pounds.

The 36" barrel is octagon, with two wedding band transitions before tapering round to the muzzle. The barrel is finished to a chocolate brown. An iron blade front sight is soldered behind the muzzle. The bore is .578" diameter, for our cast lead round ball and patch. We recommend our .570" pure lead round ball, patched with .010" Ox-Yoke patches, lubricated with Ox-Yoke Wonder Lube, for easy loading. We offer 24 gauge (.589 caliber) wads, cards, and shot for wing shooting. This trade gun has no rear sight, allowing it to qualify under NMLRA Trade Gun Match rules. Two British view marks are stamped near the breech on the left oblique flat. The top of the barrel is stamped LONDON.

The long baluster wrist runs from the lock panels to the toe, and the comb seems to sit on top of the flowing wrist. This is classic architecture for early English muskets, especially the early Sea Service muskets, which apparently served as a model for the North West Trade Gun. The design is simple and functional, and these inexpensive guns were imported and sold by the Fur Trade Companies, for many decades. Flint and percussion trade guns were still popular long after the metallic cartridge arrived, due to the low cost of ammunition for muzzle loading guns. The flat brass buttplate is secured with seven small square head nails. The wood stands proud around the brass comb of the buttplate. Both sides of the wrist were once decorated with tacks. Those tacks have been removed, and the holes and rings of the tacks are still visible.

The bottom view shows the traditional large iron triggerguard, browned to match the barrel. The triggerguard of this North West Trade Gun is correctly surface mounted. Two screws retain the rear of the triggerguard. The front bolt is also correctly installed, in a fashion unique to North West Trade Guns. Identical to a lock bolt, it is fitted upside down, or rather from the bottom, threaded into the tang from below. We note the wood is chipped and lifting around the rear of the tang.

No ramrod entry pipe is fitted, another correct feature. We note there is a 1/2" crack were the ramrod enters the stock. The two forward pipes are thin brass, with embossed grooves, much like the corrugations in cardboard, to give the pipes maximum strength against crushing or denting in hard use. The pipes allow the steel ramrod to slide smoothly, to serve the barrel. The ramrod is not threaded to accept loading or cleaning accessories. We recommend our #RAMROD-C-44-10 to service this trade gun. Two lock bolts retain the sideplate and lock. The rear sideplate screw is actually a wood screw. The brass sideplate is cast in the form of a serpent, a traditional motif for the North West Gun. Unlike surface mounted sideplates, this serpent is inlet into the side panel.

Ignition for this Trade Gun is provided by this large Northwest flint lock by Curly Gostomsky. The lock is browned to match the barrel. The lock plate is stamped with a Sitting Fox in a circle and the tail is marked BARNETT. We note the trigger can over power the half-cock notch. The sear appears to be contacting the wood in the lock mortise, preventing it from fully engaging the notch. The lock works correctly outside of the gun. Make sure to order a dozen of our #Flint-Eng-8 hand knapped English gun flints for best sparking. A vent liner is correctly installed in the barrel and is well centered on the pan. Below the lock a single trigger has been properly installed to give good leverage against the sear.

This Northwest Trade gun has a bright bore. The lock mortise will require attention before shooting to ensure safety. Perfect for your fur trade impression! Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund.
