This Type 'G' English Trade gun is used and has the appearance of a well used antique. This attractive fowler is a replica of the early English flint guns that were used in North America to trade with the Native Americans for fur during the boom of the fur trade era. This gun was constructed by noted gun maker Mike Brooks and is signed on the lock The furniture is patterned from antiques dug by Shiner in 1935 at Fort Frederica and pictured in T.M. Hamilton's book Colonial Frontier Guns." With an overall weight of 7.2 pounds and a trigger reach of 13-1/4” this trade gun is nicely setup for today’s average stature shooter. An excellent reproduction, the originals were traded widely, and this early gun will be an ideal choice for use by a serious re-enactor. This trade gun was featured in two articles by author Mark Sage, one covering the history of these early English smoothbores, the other focusing on the repair to the wrist. Copies of the articles are included with the smoothbore.

Stocked in a nice piece of black walnut the stock has a deep reddish undertone that contrasts nicely against the brass furniture. The brass buttplate has an attractive comb finial, hand engraved with a few lines and floral borders, in rococo style. The stock has also been decorated with white beads along the edge of the buttplate, wrist, forearm, and forend as found on some antique guns. The stock has a well aged appearance with many small dings and handling marks that look very appropriate with the patina on the metal work.

This flint fowling gun has a very sleek architecture, a bit more petite than a typical trade gun. It is very light, easy to carry, and a delight to hold and aim. Patterned from the original, tiny details include the correct placement of the square iron nails, which retain the brass buttplate. The long baluster wrist is a classic early feature of fusils and trade guns from Europe. The repaired wrist has a period appearance with a piece of sheet brass used to wrap the wrist, in addition to gluing and inserting a dowel The entire process of repairing the wrist is covered in the article "That's the Breaks".

The top view also shows the top flat of the tapered octagon-to-round barrel. The left oblique flat is correctly marked with an English view mark, proof mark. Visible on the rear of the barrel is a large brass rear sight that is installed into a dovetail cut on the barrel as found on the original. This style of rear sight is correct for these early smoothbores. Presence of the rear sight eliminates the gun from N.M.L.R.A. Trade gun matches. The number 265 is engraved ahead of the breech, just forward of the rear sight, LONDON is engraved on the top flat of the barrel. The tip of the inverted lock bolt can be seen in the tang, exactly as found on the original.

The width of the early buttplate, and the rounded toe is shown, revealing how the baluster wrist tapers from the lock panels, to the buttplate. The attractive brass triggerguard is correctly mounted with iron screws. Notice that the tang screw is inverted, a feature that is most often found on English guns made for the Indian trade. Two corrugated or ribbed brass forward ramrod pipes retain the tapered hickory ramrod. The ramrod does not have any provisions for threaded accessories. No ramrod entry pipe, and no forend cap is fitted in Trade Gun fashion. The brass dragon sideplate is hand engraved in a period style. Three lock bolts are found on such early trade guns, and all three are working bolts, which retain the lock plate at three points. Later guns were fitted with two lock bolts, and finally reduced to a single lock bolt.

Ignition for the trade gun is provided by this flint lock by R.E. Davis. The early round faced lock plate has a few lines of decorative floral engraving on the cock and plate, with the maker's name engraved onto the plate. This lock is finished to a silver gray patina. We recommend our English 7/8" gun flints for this lock. A stainless steel vent liner is installed. The liner is well centered on the pan, correctly positioned above the pan, where the flash is most intense. The elegant curled trigger is pinned high, to provide good leverage, and a smooth light trigger release.

This early Trade Gun has the a well aged appearance with many small marks on the stock, a sheet brass repair to the wrist, and a gray patina on the lock and barrel. Ready to go, this beautifully constructed trade gun is begging to be in the woods next fall; or perhaps you just want to place this piece of art on display. Either way this Type G style trade gun will be a lovely addition to any household.
