Stocked in walnut, this half-stock flint lock 20 gauge smooth bore trade gun is a representation of a modified North West Trade Gun made by Gary White. Correctly made with no rear sight, this gun qualifies for NMLRA trade gun match events, shooting patched round balls at paper targets, and shot charges at clay birds. It will be a powerful deer hunting gun, accurate to about 100 yards, and very handy in thick brush. Trigger reach is 14-1/4" to fit today's taller size shooter. Weight is a modest 7.8 pounds.

The 36" long barrel is over 1" octagon at the breech, tapering to sixteen sides, with a wedding brand transition to tapered round. The bore measures .620" inside diameter, and has a bright clean bore that is ready to shoot. We recommend our .600" pure lead round ball, patched with .010" Ox-Yoke patches, lubricated with Ox-Yoke Wonder Lube, for easy loading. We offer 20 gauge (.62 caliber) wads, cards, and shot for wing shooting. This trade gun has no rear sight, allowing it to qualify under NMLRA Trade Gun Match rules. A small brass post front sight is soldered 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. The barrel, rib, and ramrod pipes are finished to a dark brown. The top flat of the barrel is lightly stamped with a trademark logo followed by LONDON, which has been double stamped. The left oblique flat is stamped with a large T followed by the initials GBW near the breech.

The top view shows the thumbnail finial of the flat brass buttplate and a single tack that decorates the comb of the walnut stock. The buttplate is retained with steel screws. The sweeping comb stands above the baluster wrist. A raised carved beaver tail finial surrounds the rounded tang of the breech plug. A single tack decorates the carved beaver tail. The right side of the stock is decorated with brass tacks in a circle pattern. The left side of the buttstock has a line of tacks outlining the comb and buttplate. The forearm is also decorated with brass tacks. A single steel pin retains the barrel to the forearm.

The bottom view shows the traditional large iron triggerguard, hand finished and polished bright. The triggerguard of this North West Trade Gun is correctly surface mounted. Two screws retain the rear of the triggerguard. The front screw is also correctly installed, in a fashion unique to North West Trade Guns. Identical to a lock bolt, it is fitted upside down, or rather from the bottom, threaded into the tang from below.

No ramrod entry pipe is fitted on this half-stock trade gun. The two forward pipes are browned iron and soldered to the barrel's under rib. The pipes allow the 5/16" steel ramrod to slide smoothly, to serve the barrel. The ramrod is fitted with a flared brass loading tip. The ramrod is not threaded for cleaning or loading accessories, we recommend our #RAMROD-C-44-10 to service this trade gun.

Fast ignition is provided by an English fowling flint lock by Jim Chambers. These early London style fowler locks are found on colonial American longrifles and fowling guns. The lock is browned dark to match the barrel. It has a strong mainspring and functions as it should. The large trigger is pinned high to provide for a smooth release. The vent is correctly placed well above the bottom of the pan. A properly placed vent is essential to fast ignition.

The brass serpent sideplate is retained with two lock bolts and a rear wood screw. Serpentine sideplates were common on early English guns, especially English Sea Service Muskets, where the serpent probably represented strength and stealth at sea. The brass serpent became a standard feature on trade guns made in England, Belgium, and America.

In as-new condition the frizzen shows only a few marks from sparking. This half-stock North West Trade Gun will be a joy to carry on your next turkey or deer hunt!
