Chambers' flint lock, curly maple, iron trim,

This Southern style flint smoothbore is shaped with slender lines and a nice profile. Stocked in curly maple, with patina finished iron trim and a 40" tapered round barrel. A Jim Chamber's round faced English flintlock is fitted for sure fire ignition. Many antique Virginia longrifles and fowlers used similar imported English locks. The barrel, lock, and steel furniture have a well textured aged patina finish. The top of the barrel is initialed T*G for Tom Greco. Trigger reach is 13-1/4" to fit todays average shooter. The weight is a modest 6.7 pounds.

The 40" tapered octagon-to-round barrel is 19 gauge, or .625 caliber smoothbore. Use a patched round ball, or our 19 gauge cards and wads with lead or bismuth shot. The barrel is finished to a dark gray brown patina with a very light texture. A nickel sliver front sight is mounted behind the muzzle, no rear sight is fitted in fowling gun fashion. The bore is bright and appears to have been well maintained.

The buttstock has a Germanic influence with a wide, tall, nearly flat buttplate. The buttplate is hand forged and shaped with a decorative wedding band along the front of the comb. The buttplate is shaped with an extended toe that wraps the end of the edge of the toeplate. The short toeplate is shaped with a thumbnail design. A circular inlay is fitted above the toeplate. The inlay is hand engraved with a decorative border and drilled with a "feather hole". A rarely seen feature, a feather hole was used to hold a feather during the day and at night the feather was placed in the touch hole to prevent moisture from entering. The lock panels are shaped with a raised border along the lower edge. A nickel silver inlay is mounted ahead of the triggerguard and hand engraved with a Indian head design.

The patchbox has a large bezel with a piercing on the bullet shaped head and square inset door. The piercing on the head is accented with silver wire inlay. The door has a nickel silver oval secured to it with small iron rivets. The spring catch at the base allows the door to spring open revealing a deep square cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. The hand forged triggerguard has a mid 18th century Germanic style with a large bow and offset grip rail with curled spoon at the end.

Three iron ramrod pipes support the tapered ramrod. The ramrod entry pipe does not have a skirt and the forearm has a squared end is Southern style. The ramrod is fitted with a tapered steel tip on the hidden end of the ramrod to accept 10-32 accessories. The muzzle end of the stock is fitted with a poured pewter forend cap with open work to be both decorative and functional. Two domed head lock bolts engage the large sideplate that fills the side panel in Germanic fashion. The sideplate is stamped with maker's marks below the rear lock bolt. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek with a molded edge. To the rear of the cheek the stock is decorated with incised scroll designs. The carving is fair with some visible line width variation and fuzziness on the edges.

Sometimes called a "Queen Anne" lock, this best quality round faced flint lock actually dates from the 1730 to 1770 era, well after Anne's reign ended. Jim Chamber's "Virginia Fowler" lock has a tall cock to sweep a wide arc of sparks, making these larger locks among the best sparking locks. The pan has a bridle arm to support the frizzen pivot screw, not always found on early English locks. The plate has an integral pan, and the frizzen is tightly fitted. A powerful mainspring engages the cam action tumbler. Bearing shoulders on the tumbler and sear minimize friction, to focus all energy into speed and sparks. The frizzen shows a few marks from firing or spark testing. The lock is finished to a textured gray patina finish. Be sure to order a dozen of our best #FLINT-ENG-7 hand knapped 7/8" English gun flints. A vent liner is centered on the pan, correctly located in the sunset position, at the pan and frizzen joint. Your priming flash will be centered on this window to the main charge.

This smoothbore is fitted with a double lever double set trigger in rifle fashion. The double lever double set triggers have a long Germanic style rear trigger. These set triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. You can set the triggers with the cock in any position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

We recommend this attractive Southern smoothbore for the French & Indian War era reenactor or the Revolutionary War volunteer, seeking a suitable gun for militia duty. This patina finished smoothbore has a quality lock and is very light weight. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
