Based on a antique fowling gun from the Susquehanna River Valley in Central New York this fowler is constructed with a mixture of English and French influenced parts. For additional information on similar American fowling guns produced in New England from 1740 to 1780, we recommend the book #BOOK-FFS Flintlock Fowlers, The First Guns Made in America, by Tom Grinslade.

Stocked in a nice piece of curly maple stained to a dark brown with a reddish undertone. The L&R Queen Anne flintlock, 30" octagon-to-round barrel, and iron furniture are all finished bright. The bright finish has a few speckles of patina at the breech and on the lock typical of use on bright finished guns. This fowler includes two fitted ramrods, one with a flared brass tip and one with a flared horn tip. Unsigned this fowler is attributed to contemporary maker J. Ryan. Weighing in at 6.8 pounds, the fowler has a trigger reach of 14-3/8" making it well suited for today's larger or taller shooter.

The heart of the fowler is its 20 gauge octagon-to-round barrel. Measuring 30" in overall length, the barrel has been finished bright. The 20 gauge octagon-to-round barrel has a 9" octagon breech with a sixteen flat transition to a double wedding band to round. A nickel silver blade front sight is fitted behind the muzzle. The .625" diameter bore is bright and appears to be well maintained. The smoothbore can be fired with a patched round ball, or with lead shot using our 19 gauge wads and cards

The stock has a few small handling marks from use. The buttstock has a British influence with long straight comb architecture. The long baluster wrist of the fowler, a feature commonly found on early European muskets and trade guns, was also adopted in North America on many of the "homegrown" fowling pieces. The iron furniture is a blend of English, and French giving this fowler the "recycled" appearance of some Colonial longarms. The buttplate is wide and tall with a long stepped comb in English fashion. The flared tang of the breech is surrounded by a panel of raised and incised carving with a shell design. The tang has a groove filed into is to act as a rudimentary rear sight. The triggerguard has a French hunting gun influence with large bulbous ends. The tapered wooden ramrod is secured by three ramrod pipes, the entry pipe is shaped with a raised thumbnail on the skirt. o a matte finish. The brass tip on the ramrod is threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. The sideplate is shaped with sweeping curves and a filed molding across the tail. Two lock bolts pass through the sideplate and stock to engage the lock on the opposite side. Further back the classic fowler architecture of the gun is not interrupted by any type of cheek or other protrusion, as is proper for this type of gun.

Ignition for the gun is provided by this round faced flint lock by L&R. This round faced lock design is commonly found on early English or American longrifles and fowlers of the 1730 - 1770 era. Sometimes called a “James Barbar" lock, after that famous early London maker. The plate, cock, and other surfaces of original Queen Anne locks were often polished to a bright finish. This lock has been polished bright, and has some light patina from use. The round pan has a bridle arm to support the frizzen pivot screw. The plate has an integral pan, and the frizzen is tightly fitted. Combine it with our hand knapped 7/8" English gun flints for best results.

A stainless steel vent hole liner is correctly positioned above the pan for surefire quick ignition. Study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The trigger has a wide curled face with scroll back design. The trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear of the lock.
