This lovely Type 'G' English Trade gun is in near-new condition with only a single strike on the frizzen and a few small handling marks on the stock and one scratch on the barrel near the muzzle. This attractive fowler is a replica of the early English flint guns that were used in North America to trade with the Native Americans for fur during the boom of the fur trade era. This gun was constructed by noted gun maker Clay Smith and has his touch mark at the breech. Constructed in the style of imported English trade guns the hand engraved brass furniture is patterned from antiques dug up in Virginia and the color of the paint was taken from antique furniture, carts, and wagons of the period. Blue painted trade guns are noted as being taken from the magazine by the Boys Militia Company of Williamsburg circa 1775. An excellent reproduction, English trade guns were widely traded, and this early gun will be an ideal choice for use by a serious re-enactor. With an overall weight of 7 pounds and a trigger reach of 13-1/4" this trade gun is nicely setup for today's average stature shooter.

The 20 gauge 42" octagon-to-round barrel has a .615" diameter bore making ideal for either patched round ball or lead or bismuth shot with traditional wads and cards. The barrel is finished to a charcoal blue, a period bluing technique. The left oblique flat is correctly marked with an English view mark, makers' mark, and proof mark. The top flat at the breech is stamped London, a mark of quality of the period. Visible on the rear of the barrel is a large brass rear sight that is installed into a dovetail cut on the barrel, a sight design typical of many originals. Presence of the rear sight eliminates the gun from N.M.L.R.A. Trade gun matches. The tip of the inverted lock bolt can be seen in the tang, as found on the originals.

Tiny details include the square iron nails, which retain the brass buttplate and engraved thumb-piece inlay behind the tang. The long baluster wrist is a classic early feature of fusils and trade guns from Europe. This flint fowling gun has a very sleek architecture, a bit more petite than a typical trade gun. It is very light, easy to carry, and a delight to hold and aim. The brass buttplate has an attractive comb finial, hand engraved with a few lines and floral borders, in rococo style. The matching decorative thumb-piece, engraved with a "snow flake", a common decorative engraving found on early English guns. Two corrugated or ribbed brass forward ramrod pipes retain the sturdy 3/8" hickory ramrod with 8-32 threaded steel tip. A brass band is fitted behind the muzzle to protect the end grain of the stock. The brass triggerguard is correctly mounted with iron screws. Notice that the tang screw is inverted, a feature that is most often found on English guns made for the Indian trade.

Ignition for the trade gun is provided by a flint lock by R.E. Davis. The early round faced lock plate has a few lines of period style decorative floral engraving on the cock and plate. The lock is finished to a matte Charcoal blue and has only a single strike on the frizzen. We recommend that you order a dozen FLINT-#ENG-7 English 7/8" gun flints, too.

The brass serpent sideplate is hand engraved and inlet flush with the side panel. Three lock bolts are found on such early trade guns, and all three are working bolts, which retain the lock plate at three points. Later guns were fitted with two lock bolts, and finally reduced to a single lock bolt.

The gun is in near-new condition. Although the blue color may not suit all tastes, it is a very correctly shaped and neatly fitted and finished early English Trade Gun by a well known builder. We recommend this smoothbore for the French & Indian War era reenactor or the Revolutionary War volunteer, seeking a suitable gun for militia duty. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
