Beautifully assembled and stamped with period inspection and proof marks this well made North West Trade Gun would be ideal for your fur trade impression. Stocked in dense American black walnut, this classic North West Trade Gun has straight grain, selected for strength. Correctly fitted with traditional trade gun hardware, a mix of brass and iron, this 20 gauge flint fowling gun is as pretty as it is functional. This nice flint fowling gun is fully qualified for use in the NMLRA North West Trade Gun match, using patched round balls at paper targets, and bird shot at clay birds on the trap range. This trade gun is as-new with unfired.

The 42" Colerain barrel is octagon, with a wedding band transition to tapered round to the muzzle. A brass blade front sight is soldered behind the muzzle. The bore is .615" diameter, for our cast lead round ball and patch. We recommend our .595" pure lead round ball, patched with .010" Ox-Yoke patches, lubricated with Ox-Yoke Wonder Lube, for easy loading. We offer 20 gauge (.62 caliber) wads, cards, and shot for wing shooting. This trade gun has no rear sight, allowing it to qualify under NMLRA Trade Gun Match rules.
The long baluster wrist runs from the lock panels to the toe, and the comb seems to sit on top of the flowing wrist. This is classic architecture for early English muskets, especially the early Sea Service muskets, which apparently served as a model for the North West Trade Gun. The design is simple and functional, and these inexpensive guns were imported and sold by the Fur Trade Companies, for many decades. Flint and percussion trade guns were still popular long after the metallic cartridge arrived, due to the low cost of ammunition for muzzle loading guns. The buttstock has an inspector's cartouche from Edward Bond of the Hudson's Bay Company.

Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit today's average size shooter and weight is 7.3 pounds.
The top flat of the barrel is stamped with the Edward Bond sitting fox inspection mark. . The quarter flat at the breech is stamped with period view, proof, and barrel maker's marks. Further up on the barrel the top flat is stamped London, a mark of quality found on guns produced in various arms making centers around the world. The long tapered octagon to round barrel is nicely bright and with use with age to a silvery gray patina.
This bottom view shows the traditional large iron triggerguard, hand finished and burnished bright to match the barrel. The triggerguard of this North West Trade Gun is correctly surface mounted. Two screws retain the rear of the triggerguard while third retains the front.

No ramrod entry pipe is fitted, another correct feature. The two forward pipes are thin brass, with embossed grooves, much like the corrugations in cardboard, to give the pipes maximum strength against crushing or denting in hard use. The pipes allow the 3/8" ramrod to slide smoothly, to serve the barrel. The ramrod is fitted with a flared brass tip and an 8-32 threaded brass tip on the opposite end.
Ignition for this Trade Gun is provided by this large L&R early trade flint lock. Representative of the locks found on guns from 1730-1770, the trade locks were found on trade guns, English fowlers, French fusils and colonial American longrifles and fowlers. Well made and finished the lock has strong internals and a quick time. The lock plate is stamped with the inspection mark of Edward Bond below the pan and Barnett &Co across the tail. Make sure to order a dozen of our #Flint-Eng-7 hand knapped English gun flints for best sparking.

Behind the pan a direct drilled touch hole in the barrel is well centered on the pan. Below the lock a single trigger has been properly installed to give good leverage against the sear, no too high that it overpowers the half-cock position, the trigger is set just right.
Three lock bolts screws retain the sideplate and lock. The rear sideplate screw is actually a matching wood screw. The brass sideplate is cast in the form of a serpent, a traditional motif for the North West Gun. Unlike surface mounted sideplates, this serpent is neatly inlet flush with the side panel. The builder notes that the inlet mortise for the serpent has one small chip, and the tail has a solder joint from forming to fit the side panels. We believe that this stylized serpent sideplate evolved from the flat sideplates, embossed or engraved to resemble a serpent, found on Queen Anne and later English Sea Service muskets.

As-new unfired this North West Trade Gun has slender shaping and well fitted furniture. The bore is clean and bright, ready to shoot. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
