Chambers' English flintlock, maple,
hand forged iron trim, lightly used, signed by J. Alford

This primitive Colonial era flint lock rifle is stocked in dense sugar maple and trimmed in hand forged iron furniture. This longrifle is not highly decorated which is typical of many early longrifles. The Jim Chambers English Fowler lock is mated to a Rice Barrel Company .50 caliber 42" swamped octagon barrel. This rifle has the graceful lines and slender appearance of a antique rifle, and would be ideal for your 18th century Colonial impression. Total weight of the rifle is 7.8 pounds and the gun has a overall trigger reach of 13-3/4" making the rifle well suited for today's average size shooter.

The heart of the gun is its .50 caliber 42" swamped octagon Rice Barrel Company barrel. The swamped barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. The swamped barrel gives the rifle a very modest weight, even with the 42" length. The .50 caliber bore is cut rifled with seven lands and round bottom grooves, Internally the bore is bright and clean, ready to shoot your tightly patched round balls. A Germanic style flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10-1/2" ahead of the breech. Shooters with "older" eyes or corrective lenses will generally find this extra distance easier to focus on. The nickel silver, 0.1" thick, blade front sight with copper base is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle. The top flat of the barrel is signed 20*ALFORD*16 between the breech and the rear sight.

Stocked in sugar maple with a dark almost black tone, the stock has a hand scraped appearance that is visible as the rifle is turned in the light. The rifle is very utilitarian in design with a blend of Germanic and English influence. The hand forged buttplate is tall, wide, with a gentle curve in mid 18th century style. The dark brown tone of the buttplate almost blends into the tone of the stock. Metal to wood fit is excellent. A line of incised carving from the toe to the triggerguard gives the rifle a slender appearance. The slender wrist flows into the lock panels which have a raised molding framing them. There is what appears to be a repaired chip at the front edge of the lock panel, it is difficult to see in the dark finish. The top view of the gun shows off the slight amount of cast off. Made to fit a right handed shooter the stock is offset to better align the sights. The lock panels taper widest at the rear in early long gun fashion.

A steel toeplate is fitted to protect the toe from contact with the ground during loading and cleaning. The hand forge iron triggerguard is shaped with a large bow for the single trigger and offset grip rail with a spoon finial. The triggerguard is mounted with screws. The forend of the stock has a squared shoulder at the ramrod entry pipe, and the ramrod entry pipe does not have a skirt. This style is encountered on some Appalachian influenced rifles. The forward most ramrod pipe has a flared mouth to funnel the ramrod into position. The hickory ramrod is fitted with a extended brass tip with 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The side panel is fitted with a lozenge and tear drop sideplate, both flush mounted. The square cheekpiece has a molded edge.

The round faced flint lock, by Jim Chambers, provides reliable ignition. This attractive early English flint lock has a round faced cock and plate, and rounded frizzen and pan surfaces. Locks of this design are often found on American longrifles and fowlers of the 1730 - 1770 era. This lock features a tiny decorative molding around the plate and cock. The pan has a raised rim to tightly engage the overlapping pan cover's recess, an early weatherproof feature to keep priming dry. Below the lock a single trigger has been installed on the gun. Properly done the trigger gives good leverage against the sear bar and the result is a quick and positive lock time. A stainless steel vent hole is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

A very attractive Southern longrifle with best quality lock, barrel, and hand forged furniture. The rifle is very neatly fitted and finished with slender shaping.
