This slender late Lancaster County longrifle was constructed and signed by contemporary gunmaker G. Suiter, Williamsburg, Va. 1987. This longrifle is an elegant design typical of the late 18th to early 19th century. The rifle is stocked in curly maple with a smooth semi-gloss finish. The brass furniture includes a hand engraved daisy patchbox The 42" straight octagon barrel and small Siler flintlock are finished to a smooth dark brown. This rifle is expertly fitted and finished with tightly inlet parts, and crisp well cleaned carving. As a used rifle it does have some scattered handling marks, as well as drying check on the side panel. With an overall weight of 8.1 pounds and a trigger reach of 14-1/4" this rifle is perfectly setup for today's average to taller than average man-size shooter.
The heart of the rifle is the 42" by 7/8" straight octagon barrel. Based on the style of the rifling we believe this to be a Green Mountain barrel. The .50 caliber barrel is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a slow twist, ideal for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and clean, it has been well maintained. Green Mountain Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The barrel is fitted with a long base flat top rear sight dovetailed 9-1/4" ahead of the breech. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with a brass base dovetailed just behind the muzzle.
Stocked in maple the stock has been stained dark brown with a golden undertone. The buttplate is tall, with a narrow profile typical of guns of the late 18th to early 19th century. A daisy head patchbox is fitted to the buttplate. The daisy head patchbox design is most often associated with Lancaster County longrifles, but is also found on rifles from other regions. The patchbox is hand engraved with a traditional design. The seven screws used to mount the buttplate have the slots neatly aligned. The button release for the patchbox is mounted ahead of the heel of the buttplate. Beneath the door is a deep cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. All of the brass furniture has mellowed to a very attractive patina. The top view shows the five paneled flats of the brass buttplate comb, to mirror the flats of the barrel. A single screw mounts the buttplate comb, and the patchbox release is mounted ahead of the heel. From the comb the wrist sweeps up to meet the tang. The wrist is decorated with a nickel silver wrist inlay engraved with the letter B. The short flared tang of the barrel is retained by a single tang bolt. The tang screw slot aligns with the barrel.
A hand engraved brass toeplate has been fitted to this rifle to protect that delicate area of the stock. The stock does have some scattered handling marks above the toeplate. The brass triggerguard that has been mounted with a combination of pin and screw. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is retained by octagon ramrod pipes. The ramrod has been neatly tapered and is fitted with a brass tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. If you plan to shoot this rifle we would highly recommend using a dedicated loading and cleaning rod to save wear on this well fitted ramrod. The side panel is fitted with a hand engraved brass sideplate shaped with sweeping curves and a pointed tail. The stock does have a crack from the breech to the rear lock bolt. This is common on tightly inlet guns as the stock ages and draws against the barrel. The raised carving on the comb sweeps over the wrist and transitions into raised carved scrolls. The cheek is shaped with a molded edge. Below the cheek is a brass vent pick holder with a pick installed. Behind the cheek the stock is decorated with raised carved C scrolls.
A small Siler flint lock provides the ignition for this fine rifle. This Germanic influenced lock has been crisply polished and finished to a dark brown. We recommend our 5/8" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. A stainless steel vent liner is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The single lever double set triggers require that the triggers must be set to fire the lock. The rear trigger is lifting the sear of the lock and must be set, before you can cock the lock. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
Signed by one of the master gunsmiths of Williamsburg George Suiter this late 18th to early 19th century long rifle has a well finished maple stock, engraved brass trim and a small Siler flintlock. Used it has a few marks. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
