This flintlock longrifle has been built in the style of John Bonewitz, recognized as being from the Womelsdorf-Reading School of gunbuilders. The rifle is stocked in curly maple and trimmed in engraved brass furniture. Information about this school of longrifles is covered in the book Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age by Joe Kindig, Jr. John Bonewitz was thought to have worked from 1779 to 1809. The rifle is signed by the contemporary builder Ed Dennis on the top flat of the barrel. The .50 caliber swamped barrel is new, and this rifle is ready to shoot. Trigger reach is 13-1/4", to fit today's average shooter. This fine rifle weighs 9.1 pounds.

The .50 caliber 42" long swamped barrel makes this longrifle balance well offhand. Cut rifled by the Colerain Barrel Company with six round bottom grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bores is bright, offered in new condition. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled .012" to .016" deep depending on caliber, with six “round bottom" grooves. Called “radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost. The top flat of the barrel is engraved E. Dennis. The barrel is finished to a smooth chocolate brown. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 8" ahead of the breech. A silver blade front sight set in a brass base is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle.

The curly maple stock is stained to a dark brown with a reddish undertone, and is finished to a satin sheen. The wrist of the rifle is offset from the comb by a line of raised carving that transitions into incised carving as it flows back through the buttstock. The comb of the brass buttplate is decorated with five flats and a wedding band transition to the stock. The tang is surrounded by incised and raised carving. The brass patchbox is neatly engraved and shaded for contrast. The lid is engraved Womelsdorf, the region original rifles of this style were built in. A latch is pushed down to open the patchbox to reveal a deep cut cavity to store extra flints.

Our bottom view shows the brass toeplate, which is neatly engraved. The trigger guard is correctly mounted with a pin in the front and rear, and is decorated with flats to match the barrel. Incised carving decorates the forearm directly behind the ramrod entry pipe and flows forward to accent the forearm. The ramrod pipes have flats accented with rings on both ends. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories. A brass muzzle caps protects the endgrain of the stock. The left side of the buttstock is shaped with a square cheek. Raised scroll carving decorates the buttstock and transitions to incised carving as it flows under the cheek. The brass sideplate has two domed lock bolts that pass through to mount the lock on the opposite side.

This rifle is fitted with an L&R American Classic flint lock that is browned to match the barrel. The lock has a strong mainspring and throws a shower of sparks into the pan. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance. The hex stainless steel vent liner is directly above the center of the flash pan, high enough to serve as a window on the hottest part of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The single trigger is pinned to provide good leverage against the sear for a smooth release.

This flint longrifle is offered in new condition with a .50 bore that is ready to shoot. This rifle will be a joy to shoot at the range or to carry at your next reenactment. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund.
