Created by Minnesota gun maker Thom Frazier, this rifle is signed on the top flat of the barrel, and is a nice example of this popular gun maker's work. This Virginia style rifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in brass furniture. Ignition is provided by a Chambers Deluxe Siler flint lock mated to double lever double set trigger. The .54 caliber 44" swamped octagon Rice barrel gives the rifle excellent balance without being overly muzzle heavy. Both the lock and barrel are finished to a silver gray patina. Trigger reach is 14" to fit today's average size shooter, and the rifle's weight is 8.2 pounds.

The Rice 44" swamped octagon .54 caliber cut rifled barrel is finished with a silvery gray patina finish. The large caliber and swamped profile make this rifle point easily, without being overly heavy. Cut rifled, the bore has seven lands and grooves. Grooves are cut .016" deep, with round bottom rifling, twist is 1 turn in 66 inches. The top flat of the barrel is signed T*Frazier and the left oblique flat is engraved No. 205 near the breech. A brass blade front sight with brass base is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 6-1/2" ahead of the breech.

Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in.

The maple stock is stained to a warm brown with golden highlights to display the figure. The stock is accented with raised carving around the cheekpiece, throughout the forearm, and an incised molding along the toe. Earlier rifles are generally not as highly decorated as later "golden age" longrifles. The buttstock is fitted with a wide flat buttplate to spread the felt recoil from the .54 caliber bore over a large area. The comb of the buttplate is finished with flats and a wedding band transition. The brass furniture was polished bright, and has a applied patina to give it a well used appearance. The sliding wood patchbox has a bullet shaped nose, and the base is cut with thumb relief. Compress the spring toward the lid and slide it to the rear to reveal a deep cut cavity for flints, patches, or other shooting accessories. The triggerguard has a wide open bow to accept the double lever double set trigger. The flared tang of the barrel is retained by a single tang bolt. The raised carving from the lock panels flows into a large beaver tail around the flared tang of the breech plug. The stock has a slender profile with the forearm and forend following the taper and flare of the swamped octagon barrel.

The toe of the stock is not fitted with a toeplate, however the buttplate does extend past the toe to help protect this area when loading. The triggerguard is shaped with a wide open bow, and long grip rail with a flared spoon at the end. The trigger is retained with a steel screw in the rear and a pin in front, in early fashion. The ramrod entry pipe with long tapered skirt, and two forward pipes mount the 3/8" ramrod. The tapered ramrod is fitted with a iron tip with 8-32 threads to accept loading and shooting accessories. The muzzle end is fitted with a brass loading tip. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the forearm. The large brass sideplate fills the side panel in Germanic fashion. The raised carved lock panel terminates in a beaver tail. The square cheek is shaped with a molded edge. Raised carving decorates the stock around the cheek. Incised molding extends from the toe to the triggerguard, creating a slimming effect.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this Jim Chamber's Deluxe Siler flint lock. Notice the tall cock, top jaw and jaw screw, which sweep the frizzen from a higher point with more velocity, for better sparking. This lock has a good strong mainspring and should send a shower of sparks flying when the flint and frizzen connect. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this rifle. The lock is polished bright. to match the barrel.

The stainless steel vent liner is just visible against the patina finish on the barrel. The vent liner is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. The size and position of this liner cause it to overlap the quarter flat. The liner has been dressed to match the flat. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

Below the lock a set of double lever, double set triggers has been installed on the rifle. Properly tuned and adjusted the triggers can be set and fired in any sequence. Set the rear trigger to lighten the trigger pull when at the range or leave the triggers unset for use in cold weather hunting situations.

We recommend this simple and attractive Virginia rifle for the French & Indian War era reenactor or the Revolutionary War volunteer, seeking a suitable gun for militia duty.
