This North Carolina percussion rifle appears to have been influenced by the Appalachian school of longrifles. The .50 caliber longrifle is trimmed in brass, and stocked in curly maple. The rifle is fitted with a Jim Chambers late Ketland flintlock and double set triggers. Trigger reach is 14", to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 8.6 pounds. The rifle balances nicely in your hands, just under the rear ramrod pipe. The rifle is new with only a few strikes on the frizzen face. The aged patina on the brass gives it a used appearance.

The .50 caliber 42" straight 7/8"octagon barrel was made by Colerain Barrel Company. Cut rifled with six round bottom lands and grooves with a 1 in 56" twist for patched round ball. We recommend our .490" pure lead round ball, patched with .018" Ox-Yoke ticking, lubricated with Mink Oil grease, or other animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel exterior is finished to a dark brown. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 7-1/4" ahead of the breech. Although the rear sight is secure the sight is not fully against the bottom of the dovetail and you can see light under the base. A tall, wide brass blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle.

This curly maple stock is stained to a dark brown with golden undertones to best display the figure over the length of the stock. Curly maple is a very correct choice for stock wood, often found on antique Southern rifles. Shaping is fair with a some excess wood on the wrist, lock panels, and forend. The stock is fitted with a crescent buttplate, and a distinctive recurved spoon-shaped grip rail common to the Appalachian school triggerguard. All the brass furniture has a mottled patina finish. A brown horn inlay is glued into position behind the triggerguard. The metal to wood fit is fair with some cosmetic gaps visible. Many of the gaps have a dark glue or filler visible around the furniture. A long straight tang breech plug is fitted to the barrel and secured with a tang bolt and wood screw. The tang has a "DN" scribed near the base, which the top flat of the barrel has a .50 scribed and appears to be filled with dark black epoxy.

The 3/8" diameter ramrod is mounted through two forward ramrod pipes, and a entry pipe. The brass ramrod tip is threaded 8-32 to accept loading and cleaning accessories, and the opposite end is fitted with a covered ball puller. The ramrod is about 1" longer than the barrel. The forearm and forend of the stock have large brass oval escutcheon plates around the barrel pins. The muzzle end is protected with a brass muzzle cap. The muzzle cap is not seated against the barrel and has a small gap along the octagon channel. The side panel has a antler sideplate to support the single lock bolt. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek for a right hand shooter.

The lock panels are a bit bulky in appearance with a rather squared side to bottom, and the upper edge of the panel above the line created by the side and quarter flat. The lock placement with the flash fence at the breech end of the barrel is excellent. The clearance notch for the stop on the rear side of the cock is rough. Inletting is fair with some cosmetic gaps along the lower rear edge. The lock panel is a bit high around the tail with the flat molding on the plate below the panel.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this Jim Chamber's late Ketland flintlock. World famous, the Ketland family of English gun and flint lock makers opened an American branch, to supply our large market. Golden Age era locks were commonly found on American longrifles, circa 1790 to 1820. This lock is a wise choice, not only for its use of Siler internals with proven geometry and high reliability, but also for its correct style, and good sparking ability. We recommend our #FLINT-ENG-6 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

The R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers will fire from set or unset position and can be set in any order. The front trigger does require firm pressure when unset. In the set position the trigger pull is well adjusted. The adjust the trigger pull in the set position adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, or outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

This Southern rifle has backwoods appearance with a .50 caliber, 7/8" by 42" barrel. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. Shaping is fair and it does have some cosmetic inletting gaps. The Jim Chambers lock sparks well. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund.
