This early Colonial style longrifle is stocked in a very figured piece of curly ash and trimmed in burnished brass furniture. Ignition is provided by a Chamber's Deluxe Siler flintlock mated to a double lever double set trigger properly tuned to fire set or unset. The .54 caliber 42" Rice swamped octagon barrel gives the rifle excellent balance without being overly muzzle heavy. Created by gun maker W.G. Shipman, this rifle is signed on the top flat of the barrel. This fine rifle might not be highly decorated raised carving, but it has very attractive architecture, fine inletting, and is neatly finished. This rifle is used, with a bright and well maintained bore. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit today's average size shooter, and the rifle's weight is 8.6 pounds.

The Rice 42" swamped octagon .54 caliber cut rifled barrel is finished with a dark brown finish that nicely contrasts the color of the curly ash stock. The large caliber and swamped profile make this rifle point easily, without being overly heavy. Cut rifled, the bore has seven lands and grooves. Grooves are cut .016" deep, with round bottom rifling, twist is 1 turn in 72 inches. Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 12" ahead of the breech. A silver blade barley corn style front sight is fitted behind the muzzle. It is noted that Mr. Shipman soldered this sight in the dovetail, so if any sight adjustment is required (unlikely) it should be done with the rear sight. The top barrel flat is signed W. G. Shipman with an engraved rattlesnake slithering toward the muzzle.

The curly ash stock has a warm brown tone and displays very tightly spaced bands of figure over the length of the stock. The ash stock does not display the open grain you typically encounter on ash stocked rifles. The stock has a few small scattered handling marks, but not many. Decoration is minimal with a crisp incised line from the toe to the triggerguard, and another along the edge of the ramrod channel. The buttstock is fitted with a wide flat buttplate, in mid 18th century style, to spread the felt recoil from the .54 caliber bore over a large area. The triggerguard has a large open bow to accept the Germanic style double set triggers. The toe of the stock is protected with a brass toeplate. An entry pipe with long skirt, and two forward pipes mount the 3/8" tapered ramrod. The tapered wooden ramrod is fitted with a iron tip with 8-32 threads to accept loading and shooting accessories. A incised molding runs the length of the ramrod channel. The brass sideplate is shaped with a square tail and fills the side panel in Germanic fashion. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek piece with a molded edge, and has a steel vent pick holder mounted below it.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by a Chamber's Deluxe Siler flint lock. This Germanic style lock is finished to a silvery gray patina, which nicely contrasts the stock and barrel finish. The lock is well tuned and provides a shower of sparks. Below the lock a set of double lever, double set triggers has been installed on the rifle. The rear trigger has shape has a strong Germanic influence with the wide tapered trigger shoe. Properly tuned and adjusted the triggers can be set and fired in any sequence. Set the rear trigger to lighten the trigger pull when at the range or leave the triggers unset for use in cold weather hunting situations. The stainless steel vent liner is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

This rifle is a fine example of mid 18th century American longrifle with a strong Germanic influence on the furniture and buttstock. Hand shaped by a well respected builder, this fine rifle is very neatly fitted and finished. It is not highly decorated, which is typical of many early longrifles. This longrifle is used with a few small handling marks, with a bright well maintained bore. It will be a joy to shoot! Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
