This Tennessee style longrifle was constructed by Mr. James Turpin and is signed and numbered. Many of our customers will recognize Mr. Turpin as the gun builder featured in multiple videos and DVDs that deal with gun building including Building Muzzle-Loaders, Building Muzzle-Loaders 2, Percussion Rifle , and Building Muzzle Loading Pistols . The unique style of Southern Mountain rifles originated from the Western Carolinas into Eastern Tennessee during the late 18th and early 19th century. This Southern Mountain rifle is stocked in curly ash and trimmed in iron furniture. This rifle is fitted with a left hand large Siler flintlock mated to a single trigger. Some of the iron furniture is hand engraved, and the stock has some raised carving, which is more decorative than most antique Southern Mountain rifles. This rifle is stocked with a 13-1/2" trigger reach, for a average size shooter. This trim longrifle weighs only 7.1. pounds.

The .32 caliber octagon-to-round barrel is said to be a Douglas premium barrel, but is unmarked as to a maker on any visible surfaces. Douglas Barrel Co. no longer offers muzzleloading barrels, discontinuing production to focus on modern cartridge barrels during the 80's. Well known for producing a good quality product. The bore is cut rifled with six lands and grooves, in a slow twist ideal for patched round ball. The rear sight is mounted 13" ahead of the breech. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with a integral base soldered to the barrel.

The curly ash stock has a warm brown tone, and displays both figure and the open grain pattern so commonly associated with ash. This mountain rifle is a full dress Tennessee rifle with buttplate, muzzle cap, and patchbox. The long "iron banana" patchbox is accented with some hand engraving on both the head and the door. A small brass button on the tail end releases the door to reveal a deep cut cavity below for storing flints, jags, or other related accessories. The head of the patchbox is accented with a incised carved potted plant design. The triggerguard is shaped with a wide bow to provide easy access to the trigger. The offset grip rail is shaped with a fish lip curl at the end. All of the iron furniture; buttplate, triggerguard, ramrod pipes, are finished to a dark brown. The rifle is used and does display some wear in the brown finish on areas that are frequently handled. The buttplate is not perfectly centered behind the tang. Rather, it is offset from the left hand shooter's cheek. This feature places the left hand shooter's eye directly behind the line of sight, making this gun instinctive to point and shoot for a left hand shooter.

Two small steel screws retain the toeplate. The toeplate protects the fragile toe area, which is otherwise often susceptible to dents and chips during loading and cleaning. . The triggerguard is securely mounted to the stock with a combination of pin and screws. The forearm is neatly shaped with a slender profile and a iron muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. Three ramrod pipes secure the 5/16" diameter ramrod to the rifle. The ramrod is fitted with a steel tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. The ramrod is likely a later replacement is longer than the barrel, which makes it protrude past the muzzle when installed in the ramrod pipes. Two lock bolts are mounted to secure the English style sideplate. The sideplate is accented with hand engraving on the tail and beneath the rear lock bolt. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek piece, which is accented with a raised and incised carving to either side.

The left hand large Siler flintlock has had the plate reshaped with a squared tit on the tail to give it a more typical English appearance vs. a Germanic. One of the most common lock choices for left hand shooters this lock should give years of reliable service. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints, #FLINT-ENG-6, for use with this lock. Mr. Turpin has positioned the lock to create what is considered ideal architecture with the flash fence at the rear of the barrel. A stainless steel vent liner is well positioned on the pan. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

In used condition this .32 caliber left hand Southern longrifle is stocked in curly ash, and trimmed in browned iron furniture. The left hand large Siler lock sparks well.
