This early Transitional Colonial era longrifle is obviously of Germanic heritage, but has several distinctly American features. The curly maple stock, and swamped octagon barrel were features that became popular with skilled German gunmakers, when they came to America. This hand finished early style .36 caliber longrifle is trimmed in brass furniture. We note the muzzle has been coned and the barrel has some visible light pitting running its entire length. The curly maple stock has attractive tiger stripe figure, and is finished reddish brown, with raised carved accents. With an overall weight of 8.8 pounds and a trigger reach of 13-3/8", this rifle will properly fit today's average size shooter.

The heart of the rifle is its .36 caliber swamped octagon barrel. Measuring 42" in length, the swamped octagon barrel is cut rifled with seven radius grooves, in a slow twist, for use with a patched round ball. We note the muzzle has been coned to allow the ball to be thumb started. The bore is bright, but does have visible light pitting running its entire length. A silver blade front sight with brass base is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle. A classic flat top rear sight is fitted 12" from the breech, just forward of the balance point. The barrel is finished to an even chocolate brown. The flared thumbnail tang has a thin border engraved around its perimeter. A high dome bolt is used to secure the tang through the stock and into the trigger plate below. Three brass pins retain the barrel to the stock.

The curly maple stock has been stained to a warm reddish brown to best display the contrasting stripes of figure over the length of the stock. The stock has only a few small handling marks from use. A sliding wooden patchbox has been installed on the rifle. The door has carving accenting the domed bone inlay in the center. Compress the spring toward the lid and slide it to the rear to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. The buttplate is wide, tall, and nearly flat in mid 18th century style. Our top view of the rifle shows the three flats on the comb of the buttplate. Forward of the comb a raised line of carving accents the transition of the comb into the wrist and flows down both sides of the buttstock. An oval bone inlay decorates the top of the wrist.

This bottom view shows the width of the comfortable buttplate. The triggerguard has three flats filed on both finials and has a slightly burnished appearance with a mellow aged patina; as has all the brass furniture on the rifle. The bow of the guard is lightly engraved, and the guard is correctly mounted with pins. An engraved brass toeplate with acorn finial protects this critical area of the stock and is retained with two steel screws. A line of incised carving highlights the toe line of the buttstock and terminates at the step for the triggerguard.

The stock has a line of incised molding along the forend. The ramrod pipes are shaped with large paneled flats and rings on the ends. The ramrod has a brass loading tip, and the opposite end is carved as a jag. The tip is not threaded for cleaning or loading accessories. We recommend our #RAMROD-C-44-10 to services this rifle. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. The side panel is fitted with a large Germanic style sideplate decorated with a small amount engraving. Two dome headed lock bolts pass through the brass sideplate and stock to engage the lock on the opposite side. Raised and incised carving decorates the area ahead and behind the cheek. The bottom of the cheek features three incised lines of molding.

Ignition for the rifle is provided a large Siler flint lock. The lock plate has been polished bright and is engraved Constantini. The cock is lightly engraved and also polished bright. The top jaw screws has some light marring from being tightened with a pliers. We recommend our 7/8" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. A stainless steel vent liner has been installed and is correctly positioned to provide reliable ignition. The double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire in any sequence; you may cock the lock or set the trigger in any combination. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

The rifle is offered in used condition with a mostly bright bore, but it does have light pitting running its entire length. The brass furniture has a mellow aged patina and the curly maple stock is in excellent condition. This .36 caliber rifle will be a joy to carry on your next small game hunt.
