This attractive early Colonial era longrifle is obviously of Germanic heritage, but has distinctly American features. The curly maple stock became popular with skilled German gunmakers, when they came to America. Rifles of this style are typical of rifles produced in or near Christian's Spring, Pennsylvania, during the mid 1700's. One of the most notable rifles from that region was said to have been owned by Edward Marshall. He is best known for his participation in the "Indian walk" or walking purchase in 1737. To the protests of the Indians he ran, securing a huge parcel of the land. Increasing the animosity between Indians and settlers.

This hand finished early style .36 caliber longrifle is trimmed in iron furniture. The curly maple stock has attractive tiger stripe figure, and is finished to a dark brown with golden undertone. The stock is accented with raised and incised carving with opposing C scrolls. With an overall weight of 8.2 pounds and a trigger reach of 13-1/4", this Christian's Spring style rifle will properly fit today's average size shooter. This rifle is as-new, having only been test fired. Any marks on the stock, and patina on the metalwork were applied to give the rifle a well used appearance. The top flat is signed by the maker W. Blaker.

The heart of the rifle is a .36 caliber Colerain octagon-to-round barrel. Measuring 44" in length, the octagon-to-round profile greatly reduces the muzzle weight, so it gently hangs in position when held offhand. The bore is rifled with six deep radius grooves with a caliber appropriate 1 in 48" twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright and appears as-new. A tall browned steel blade front sight fitted to the front dovetail. A classic flat top rear sight is fitted 8" from the breech, just behind the balance point, allowing the rifle to be carried as easily as it is sighted.

The curly maple stock has been stained to a warm brown to best display the contrasting stripes of figure over the length of the stock. The stock has a applied patina to give it a used but well maintained appearance. A sliding wooden patchbox has been installed on the rifle. The door has thumb relief cut at the base but is otherwise devoid of decoration. Compress the spring toward the lid and slide it to the rear to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. The buttplate is wide, tall, and nearly flat in mid 18th century style. Our top view of the rifle shows off the decorative buttplate comb extension that is held in place by a single screw. Forward of the comb a raised line of carving passes over the wrist. The upper lock panels are framed with a panel of raised carving around the flared tang of the breech plug. The carving is well done with clean backgrounds. The bottom view shows the width of the comfortable buttplate. The triggerguard has a patina finish with the areas the would be typically handled brighter than other areas. The triggerguard flares wide through the bow, a typical feature of 1750 vintage rifles. The triggerguard is mounted with a pin at front, and an iron screw at the rear, typical for early transitional longrifles.

The ramrod pipes are shaped with round bodies and raised rings on the ends. The ramrod has wood jag shaped at the end, but does not have any provisions for threaded accessories. A muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. The side panel is fitted with a large Germanic style sideplate decorated with a filed molding across the tail. Two dome headed lock bolts pass through the sideplate and stock to engage the lock on the opposite side. Raised and incised carving decorates the area ahead and behind the cheek. The carving is well done with a clean background.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this Jim Chambers' Christians Spring flint lock. The lock plate has been finished to a dark patina with a speckled gray brown appearance. We recommend our 7/8" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. Behind the pan a touch hole liner has been installed in the barrel, internally coned the liner provides the priming charge quick access to the main charge leading to fast and reliable ignitions. The double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire in any sequence; you may cock the lock or set the trigger in any combination. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

This small caliber rifle has a bright bore, the lock sparks well, and the curly maple stock is attractively decorated. The iron furniture has a applied patina to give it the appearance of years of use. If you desire a nice Colonial flint lock rifle for your collection, think long and hard about this particular gun.
