This fine rifle by contemporary maker Mike Compton blends the features of Lancaster County Pennsylvania rifles with the decorative carving in the style of G. Shreyer from the neighboring York County, Pennsylvania. This .45 caliber longrifle would make a fine shooter and is appropriate for many frontier and native historical portrayals. Trigger reach is 14" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 7.8 pounds.

The .45 caliber barrel is a 13/16" by 42" straight octagon barrel. The .45 caliber bore is cut rifled with eight narrow lands with wide grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and is as-new. The barrel is finished to a dark brown matte brown. A long base flat top rear sight is fitted 9-1/4" ahead of the breech. This extra distance from the breech can make it easier for shooters with "older" eyes or corrective lenses to focus on the sights. A nickel silver blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle.

The curly maple stock has the classic profile found on antique late 18th century Lancaster longrifles. The buttstock is fitted with a bullet shaped sliding wood patchbox. Compress the latch at the rear toward the lid and slide the door toward the buttplate to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. Our top view shows the profile of the classic Lancaster stock. The brass buttplate comb is filed with flats and a has a wedding band transition to the stock. The cheek is angled to the rear, to recoil away from your face, an ingenious feature found on better rifles. The lock panels are decorated with a raised and incised carved Fluer de Lys in the style of G. Shroyer from York County, Pennsylvania.

The rifle's brass work was burnished bright and then very lightly aged to give it just a hint of patina. The brass triggerguard is signed M. Compton on the bow. The forearm is shaped with a slender profile that just wraps the barrel. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is mounted through paneled ramrod pipes with ringed ends. The ramrod is fitted with a tapered steel tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The lock panels are very trim and neatly shaped to give this rifle a slender profile. The brass side plate is a classic square tail 19th century Lancaster County style. The lock is retained by two steel lock bolts. The maple stock has a square cheek piece with molded edge accented with raised and incised carving to either side. The buttplate comfortably engages the shooter's shoulder.

Sure-fire ignition is provided by a large Siler flint lock. This lock captures the styling used on many American longrifles. Most flint locks were imported from England or Europe, for use by American gunmakers. Finished to a silver gray, the lock contrasts the barrel nicely. The lock plate stands above the wood panel, and is chamfered along each edge, creating the shadow line around the lock plate. The flint cock and plate are lightly engraved. Double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire in any sequence; you may cock the lock or set the trigger in any combination. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel White Lightnin' vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
