This fullstock Early Plains rifle is in as-new condition, by the popular muzzle loading gunmaker, Mr. Gary White. Stocked in nicely figured tiger stripe maple, this flint rifle is trimmed in brass furniture, all hand polished. This is a Green River Rifle Works Collectors Association gun and is marked as such on the barrel. The barrel is also marked S. Hawken St. Louis and is representative of the lightweight rifles made for the local Missouri trade. Weighing in at 8.4 pounds the fullstock rifle has a trigger reach of 14" making the gun well suited for today's average size shooter

The heart of the rifle is a .50 caliber 7/8" by 39" long straight octagon Colerain barrel. The .50 caliber bore is cut rifled with six lands and grooves with a 1 in 72" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright, in unfired condition. The exterior is finished to a dark brown. The barrel is stamped S. Hawken St. Louis on the top flat behind the rear sight. The left oblique flat is stamped GRRW CA H-24 EBW near the breech. A semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 7-1/4" ahead of the breech. A silver blade front sight set in a copper base is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle.

Trimmed entirely in brass, in the early Hawken style, this rifle has a modestly curved early buttplate, to minimize the recoil from the .50 caliber bore. Shaped from a blank the figured curly maple stock has attractive tiger stripe figure, with randomly spaced stripes running the full length of the fullstock. The Medina style brass patchbox is shaped with piercings on the side panels. The door has a catch release mounted near the buttplate. Beneath the door is a deep cavity for storing flints, jags, or other accessories. The patchbox is retained with large flat head steel screws. We note there is a piece of filler wood around one of the top curves on the patchbox.

Notice the long tang, with two tang bolts that anchor the tang to the long trigger plate, reinforcing the wrist, a classic feature of rugged Hawken rifles. The long tang flint hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, close the frizzen, drift the keys past the underlugs, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. The forend of a fullstock is very fragile without the barrel mounted in it and should be handled with care. Four keys secure the barrel to the forearm and pass directly through the stock without the use of escutcheons.

Place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by a oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. We note the ramrod extends past the muzzle by 1-1/2". The ramrod passes through three brass pipes, two forward and one entry. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock.

The toe is protected with a brass toeplate. Early Hawken double set triggers, by R.E. Davis, are made with a very long trigger bar. Two bolts enter from the long steel tang, re-enforcing the wrist from above and below. A fall from your horse is not likely to break the wrist of this very strong rifle, a desirable feature for the Mountain Man, when trapping in Colorado. A brass flat-to-wrist trigger guard is mounted to the long trigger plate. A square cheek piece provides a nice rest when aiming this .50 caliber rifle. The single lock bolt passes through an early Hawken style brass sideplate.

This fullstock Plains flint rifle is fitted with L&R's Durs Egg flintlock browned to match the barrel. This lock has a strong mainspring and will throw a shower of sparks for fast ignition. The frizzen only shows a few marks from being tested. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance with this lock. The early long bar double lever double set triggers by R.E. Davis are correctly tuned to fire from the set or unset position. You may cock the lock before or after the triggers are set. The stainless touch hole liner brings the main charge very close to the priming flash. This vent is perfectly centered over the pan, correctly positioned to find the hottest center of the ignition flash.

This .50 caliber rifle will make an excellent addition to any black powder shooters collection and should work great at the range this summer and in the woods next fall.
