Styled after the late 18th century firearms that evolved in the Bucks County region of Pennsylvania. This rifle is well fitted, with attractive incised carving, and the slender shaping of a antique. Signed by contemporary builder Mike Compton. The rifle is new, unfired. Weighing in at 7.5 pounds this Buck County longrifle has a trigger reach of 13-1/2” making it well suited for today’s average size shooter.

Measuring 42” in overall length, the .50 caliber swamped octagon Getz barrel has a mirror bright bore cut rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. This gives the rifle a modest weight without being overly muzzle heavy. We recommend our .490" pure lead round ball by Hornady, patched with .015" Ox Yoke patching, lubed with our real Mink Oil patch grease, over a charge of GOEX FFg black powder. The barrel is fitted with a nickel silver blade front sight. The semi buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 11-1/4" ahead of the breech. Shooters with corrective lenses or "older" eyes will find the extra distance from the breech easier to use.

The rifle is stocked in curly maple, stained to a dark brown with golden undertones to best display the figure over the length of the stock. The brass furniture has been burnished bright and has a very light aged patina applied. The lines of this Bucks County region have been attractively reproduced. The typical Bucks County style brass patchbox is hinged along the lower edge. The patchbox is opened by depressing the release just ahead of the heel of the buttplate. A light amount of floral engraving can be seen on the cover of the box, nicely done this is an appropriate addition to the rifle. Internally the cavity is spacious and deep, ready to hold your extra shooting supplies. Note the double line of molding that runs from toe to triggerguard, it is matched forward by a double incised line that runs the length of the ramrod channel. Tapering forward the comb gently curves toward the wrist before disappearing completely at a line of incised carving. From that point forward the wrist sweeps up toward the breech where it intersects with the flared tang. A panel of incised carving surrounds the tang and continues around the lock panels.

From below the bottom flat of the stock is visible. Screwed into position with a single screw the brass toeplate has a thumbnail head, which has been hand engraved with decorative scrolls. The brass triggerguard was burnished bright and is signed on the bow of the triggerguard M. Compton. The 3/8” diameter wooden ramrod is held in place by three brass ramrod pipes with round bodies and raised rings on the ends. The ramrod is fitted with a steel tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. The side panel is fitted with a brass sideplate with sweeping curves and a ball end finial. The sideplate is hand engraved with decorative scrolls and a stippled background. The square cheek is shaped with a molded edge and flanked by incised carved C scrolls to either side of the cheekpiece. The carving is well executed with clean smooth lines and even line weight.

Ignition is provided by this Jim Chambers' Deluxe Siler flintlock. Fitted with a heavy mainspring, the lock sparks very well when combined with our #FLINT-ENG-6 hand knapped 3/4" English flints. The lock is finished to a brown with a very slight patina. The single trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear. Notice the stainless vent liner that has been installed on the rifle. This vent is perfectly positioned, well above the bottom of the pan. A vent serves as a window, allowing the heat of the flash to be instantly transmitted to the main charge. It should not be located low in the pan, serving as a drain, where it will slow ignition, causing the classic "whoosh - bang" delay often associated with flint longrifles. With this geometry, ignition appears to have no such delay.
