This classic golden age era fullstock flint longrifle is used, ready to shoot. Made in the popular Lancaster County, Pennsylvania style this rifle is signed by contemporary builder Mike Compton on the triggerguard bow. The curly maple stock is finished to a very dark brown with golden undertones and features traditional raised carving. The burnished brass furniture has light patina finish. The small Siler flintlock is hand engraved and finished to a light gray brown patina. The Douglas straight octagon barrel is finished to a dark brown. The rifle has a 13-1/4" trigger reach for today's average man size shooter. The rifle weighs 7.6 pounds, and holds quite steady due to the combination of caliber and size of the barrel.

The .45 caliber barrel is a 13/16" by 42" Douglas straight octagon barrel. Douglas Barrel Company produced muzzle loading barrels in the late 1970's, and later dedicated there work to modern cartridge rifles exclusively. Mr. Compton was lucky enough to find a unused barrel blank for this longrifle. The .45 caliber bore is cut rifled with seven square cut grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and is as-new. A flat top rear sight is fitted 11" ahead of the breech. This extra distance from the breech can make it easier for shooters with "older" eyes or corrective lenses to focus on the sights. A tall browned steel blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle.

This Lancaster rifle shows the classic angular lines of the buttstock common to the region. The wide flat brass buttplate will help spread the felt recoil from the .45 caliber bore over a large area. The buttstock is decorated with a raised molding from the toe to the grip rail, and a line of raised carving from the comb down over the wrist. The buttstock is fitted with a sliding wood patchbox with thumb relief at the base, and incised border along the upper and lower edges. Compress the spring at the base and slide the patchbox toward the buttplate to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other accessories. Notice how the cheek is angled to the rear, to recoil away from your face, an ingenious feature found on better rifles. The comb is offset with raised carving creating a cameo wrist. The lock panels taper slightly widest to the rear, a correct detail for flint longrifles from this period. The flared tang of the breech plug is secured with a tang bolt, fitted with the slot neatly aligned with the barrel. The upper lock panel is decorated with delicate raised and incised carving around the tang. All the carving is very crisp and shallow, as found on most antique longrifles.

The wide square toe tapers into the lock panels. No toeplate is fitted, instead the buttplate stands just proud of the wood to provide some protection to this area. The brass triggerguard has a burnished patina finish and the bow is signed by the maker M. Compton. Incised carving decorates the forearm of the stock behind the thumbnail skirt of the ramrod entry pipe and transitions into a raised molding along the forend along the edge of the ramrod channel. The ramrod is fitted with a steel tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The muzzle end of the stock is shaped with a schnabel tip with relief to securely grasp the ramrod. The side panel is fitted with a hand engraved square tail Lancaster County style brass sideplate, mounted with two lock bolts. The bolts are fitted with the slots neatly indexed and aligned. The side panel is shaped with a raised molding, and beaver tail finial. The raised carving flows over the cameo wrist into the front edge of the cheek piece. The square cheek is shaped with a stepped face. Raised carved C scrolls decorate the stock behind the cheekpiece.

This rifle is fitted with a small Siler flintlock. Fine tuned to provide snappy action and good sparking. We recommend our 5/8" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. The lock is finished to a gray brown patina. The plate and flint cock are accented with a few lines of hand engraving in folk art style. A White Lightnin' vent hole liner is perfectly positioned, well above the bottom of the pan. A vent serves as a window, allowing the heat of the flash to be instantly transmitted to the main charge. It should not be located low in the pan, serving as a drain, where it will slow ignition, causing the classic "whoosh - bang" delay often associated with flint longrifles. With this geometry, ignition appears to have no such delay. The traditional double lever double set triggers have been properly tuned to be set and fired in any combination. You may cock the lock before or after you set the triggers. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

This signed Lancaster County, Pennsylvania longrifle is very neatly assembled with well fitted parts attractive carving. The small Siler lock sparks well, the double set trigger fire set, or unset. The .45 caliber bore is bright in as-new condition. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund.
