Styled after the late 18th century firearms that evolved in the Bucks County region of Pennsylvania, this fine flint lock longrifle is neatly fitted and finished. Built by contemporary builder J. M. Yates, this rifle based from example 65 in Dr. George Shumway's book Rifles of Colonial America, Volume 1. This rifle is well fitted, with incised carving, and the slender shaping of a antique. The design of the rifle is intended to appear as a fullstock that was later converted to halfstock in the 19th century. The rifle appears to have seen little use and only has a few marks on the frizzen face. The stock has a few small scattered handling marks, while the lock and barrel finish show little evidence of use. Weighing in at 8.3 pounds this Buck County longrifle has a trigger reach of 13-1/4” making it well suited for today’s average size shooter.

The .45 caliber Rice Barrel Company barrel is 7/8" straight octagon. The caliber and barrel length give this rifle a modest weight and it holds very steady off hand. The bore is cut rifled with seven lands and grooves, with square bottom rifling. Twist is 1 turn in 66 inches, ideal of a tightly patched round ball. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in.

Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. The barrel is dovetailed with a flat top rear sight 12-1/2" ahead of the breech. Shooters with "older" eyes or corrective lenses will generally benefit from the extra distance. A brass blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle.

Evolved along the lines of the near by Lehigh Valley longrifles, this fine Bucks County rifle displays features that are fairly unique to that region. These features include the thumbnail finial on the rear of the triggerguard, a similar finial can also be found on the buttplate comb extension, a additional feature common on Bucks Co. guns is the decorative skirt on the ramrod entry pipe. The lines of this Bucks County longrifle have been attractively reproduced, they hold true to those of the original longrifles from that same area of Pennsylvania that borders on the southern edge of the Lehigh Valley. The rifle is stocked in a lovely piece of curly maple, which has been neatly shaped and stained to a dark brown with the iridescent figure visible as it is rolled in the light. The front of the comb and lock panels are decorated with well executed incised carving. Our top view of the longrifle shows off the tapered comb and slender wrist. The classic thumbnail finial on the buttplate is visible. The barrel is breeched with a flared thumbnail tang, the stock does have a very small check starting at the end of the tang.

From below the bottom flat of the stock is visible The toe is protected with a short brass toeplate with a lobed end. The toeplate has been neatly hand engraved. The thumbnail finial found on the triggerguard are another feature common to Bucks Co. rifles. The brass furniture that has been allowed to develop a mellow patina, the engraving has been neatly shaded for contrast. The tapered wooden ramrod is fitted with a steel tip with 8-32 threads for accessories. The ramrod is held in place by three brass ramrod pipes. All three pipes have rounded bodies with ringed ends, while the entry pipe has a long brass skirt. Designed to appear as a fullstock trimmed to a halfstock a poured pewter forend cap is fitted. Representative of a number of rifles in the Shumway work, the brass sideplate has limited decoration. Two large dome headed lock bolts pass through the sideplate and stock to engage the lock on the opposite side. It is noted that the front lock bolt intersects the ramrod channel. The engraved design on the lock bolt head and sideplate should be oriented so the arrows align to allow the bolt to be oriented correctly. The ramrod should aways be removed before removing the lock bolts. The classic Lehigh Valley/Bucks Co. style cheek is decorated with dual moldings that cut across its face. Incised carving can be found both forward and behind the cheek. A large engraved nickel silver flowering star is inlaid into the cheek.

The Dale Johnson flintlock is based on large Siler lock internals, but features a 1/8" drop in the tail and a banana base line curvature reminiscent of the Transition period. This lock captures the styling used on many American longrifles. Most flint locks were imported from England or Europe, for use by American gunmakers. The lock plate stands slightly above the wood panel, and is chamfered along each edge, creating the shadow line around the lock plate. Finished to a pewter gray, the lock contrasts the dark finish on the stock and barrel nicely. Properly tuned and adjusted the lock has a strong mainspring and will surely create a shower of sparks, make sure to order a dozen of our 3/4" hand knapped English gun flints, #Flint-Eng-6, for best sparking. The double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire in any sequence; you may cock the lock or set the trigger in any combination. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

Expertly produced, this fine Bucks County style flint lock longrifle will make an excellent addition to any black powder shooters collection.
