This .50 caliber Virginia longrifle has a early 19th century style with the design influenced by the work of John Sheetz. Stocked in maple, the stock is stained to a golden brown to best display the raised and incised carving. The brass furniture is polished bright and accented with hand engraving. The Jim Chambers Dale Johnson flintlock and Colerain swamped barrel are both finished to a dark brown. This well finished rifle is signed and numbered by contemporary maker J.A. Wymore. Weighing in at 8.1 pounds the rifle has a trigger reach of 14", perfectly setup for today's average to larger sized shooter.

Ready to shoot, the .50 caliber Colerain barrel is 39-1/2" straight octagon. The bore is rifled with six deep grooves, in a slow twist, for use with a patched round ball. Radius groove rifling eliminates the square inside corner in each groove, allowing the bore to be much easier to clean. This bore is bright and clean inside, in perfect condition. A steel blade is fitted to the front dovetail. A classic semi buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech, just behind the balance point, allowing the rifle to be carried as easily as it is sighted. It balances nicely in your hands, and is very steady to aim, offhand.

The buttstock has a very modest curve to engage the shoulder in very late 18th and early 19th century fashion. The buttstock is shaped with an incised molding along the toe. A similar molding extends down the forend of the rifle. The well fitted brass patchbox is shaped with piercings on the head and side panels. The patchbox is decorated with hand engraved flower and scroll designs. The door has a catch release mounted near the buttplate. Beneath the door is a felt lined cavity for storing flints, jags, or other accessories. The comb is offset from the wrist with a line of raised carving that transitions into decorative scrolls along the toe. The barrel is secure with four steel wedge keys, only the rear has a escutcheon plate. All the keys are very neatly fitted. A brass muzzlecap has also been installed to finish out the stock at the muzzle end. Two forward pipes and one entry pipe hold the tapered wooden ramrod in position. The ramrod has a brass tip that is threaded to accept 8-32 male attachments. The brass sideplate of the rifle is shaped with sweeping curves and a square tail in the style of John Sheetz. The cheek is inlaid with a hand engraved brass star. Raised carved scrolls flow down from the wrist into the square cheek piece. Additional raised and incised carving flow from the rear of the cheek.

The Dale Johnson flintlock is based on large Siler lock internals, but features a 1/8" drop in the tail and a banana base line curvature reminiscent of the Transition period. This lock captures the styling used on many American longrifles. Most flint locks were imported from England or Europe, for use by American gunmakers. The lock plate stands slightly above the wood panel, and is chamfered along each edge, creating the shadow line around the lock plate. Finished brown, the lock matches the barrel nicely. A steel vent liner has been installed in the barrel, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

Double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire in any sequence; you may cock the lock or set the trigger in any combination. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.
