Henry Eicholtz Leman made many rifles during his 53 year career, from 1834 until 1887, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Although Leman made many styles of rifles, perhaps he is best known for his Indian Trade Rifles. This reproduction of Henry Leman's Indian Trade Rifle is stocked in curly maple. Mixed furniture is quite common on original H. E. Leman rifles and this rifle is trimmed in brass furniture, with a iron buttplate. Hand made by contemporary builder M. Compton, this rifle is as new, unfired. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 8.3 pounds.

Ordered in both flint and percussion ignition, by the U. S. Government and many private firms, Leman rifles were the favorite of Indians across the frontier. "Of the 410 guns captured from the Sioux and Cheyenne in the final campaigns of 1877, 94 were Leman rifles." (Henry E. Leman - Riflemaker, by Charles E. Hanson, Jr., The Museum of the Fur Trade Quarterly, Volume 20, Number 4, Chadron, Nebraska, Winter 1984.)

The nice quality Colerain Barrel Company .50 caliber 15/16" octagon by 36" barrel is cut rifled in with six radius grooves with a 1 in 56" twist for a tightly patched round ball. Unfired, the bore is bright, in as-new condition. The barrel is finished to a dark brown with a very slight patina finish. The front sight is a brass blade. The rear sight is dovetailed 8-5/8" ahead of the breech.

The maple stock has natural figure visible along the comb and forend. Henry Leman often striped his stocks artificially, painting the stripes with ink. The stock is finished to a satin sheen. A traditional iron buttplate is fitted. The buttplate has a long pointed heel with a slight upward tip as found on antique examples. The buttstock is fitted with H. E. Leman's unique brass wilted lily capbox. The lid snaps open and closed smartly, under finger pressure, revealing a correctly hand bored cavity under the lid, exactly like the original. Look closely, and you may notice that the buttplate is not perfectly centered behind the tang. Rather, it is offset from the right hand shooter's cheek. This feature is called cast-off, and it places the right hand shooter's eye directly behind the line of sight, making this gun instinctive to point and shoot. When viewed from the top, the lock panels are slim and trim, and the wrist flows gracefully back to the tapered comb.

The brass toeplate is correctly mounted with an iron screw. The triggerguard is finished to a dark patina. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a iron ramrod tip with 8-32 tip for threaded accessories. A short brass muzzle cap decorates and protects the end grain at the muzzle. The lock is mounted with a single lock bolt mounted through a flush inlet sideplate. The cheek view shows the simple square raised cheek piece, with a single line molding.

The L&R late English flint lock has a correct 1820 to 1830 era appearance, and is very similar to a 1840 dated lock on a antique H.E. Leman rifle. This lock features a water-proof pan, roller bearing frizzen spring, stirrup link, stiff mainspring, and fly detent. Turned raised bearing rings on the tumbler and sear minimize friction. The lock is finished to a matte brown. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints, #FLINT-ENG-6 for use in this lock. The lock plate is decorated with traditional scroll designs, and Leman Lanctr, PA. The single trigger is pinned high, to provide maximum leverage, and minimum trigger release pressure. Fine internal lock geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release.

Fast ignition is assured by a vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

If you seek an 1840 era flint lock plains rifle, consider this nice hand made rifle. It has the look and feel of an antique Henry E. Leman Indian Trade Rifle. This longrifle is new, unfired. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
