This classic American flint longrifle captures the style of one of the best Lancaster County gun makers. Modeled after the work of Jacob Dickert, it is stocked in curly maple, and trimmed in brass. Jacob Dickert traveled from Germany to America about 1750, he studied under an unknown master, learning the gunmaker's art. He worked in Lancaster County from 1769 until his death in the early 1820's. He was an artist, producing decorated relief carved flint longrifles for his many customers. He also produced rifles for the Continental Army during the American Revolution and later Federal period. This used rifle has a collaborative effort by: Mark Thomas, John Donelson, Eugene Shadley, and Mark Sage. Trigger reach is 14-3/4 to fit a larger or taller shooter. Weight is 9.5 pounds.

The Getz 44" swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The .54 caliber bore is cut rifled with seven lands and grooves with a caliber appropriate slow twist for patched round ball. The muzzle has a deep cone to ease loading of a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The exterior of the barrel has been rubbed back to a patina gray to give the rifle a well used appearance. The barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech. a nickel silver blade front sight with brass base is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The previous owner notes that the blade has been recently replaced and will need to be sighted-in. The top flat of the barrel is signed J. Dickert with a arrow and tomahawk touch mark as shown on antique examples in the book Moravian Gunsmiths of the American Revolution.

This attractive flint fullstock longrifle is trimmed in brass, which has been burnished to a satin finish and has developed a light olive patina from use and handling. The buttplate is wide, flat, and comfortable to aim. It engages your shoulder to spread the recoil of the .54 caliber bore over a large area. The buttplate comb is shaped with five flats and a wedding band. The buttplate is offset or cast-off from the centerline of the rifle to put the shooter directly behind the line of the sights. The cheek is angled to the rear, to recoil away from the shooter's face. The curly maple stock has a well aged patina with the dark stock finish rubbed back along the wrist and comb, areas that are frequently handled, to give the appearance of a rifle that had been in daily service for decades. The brass patchbox has a daisy finial, a typical motif found on Lancaster County rifles. Mounted with unplated iron screws, the patchbox has been hand engraved with a traditional folk art appearance. The door has a push button release just ahead of the heel of the buttplate. Beneath the door is deep cut cavity, for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. The wrist is fitted with a silver oval engraved with the initials M. S. A raised and incised panel surrounds the flared tang of the breech plug. The panel transitions into the raised border around the lock and side panels.

Our bottom view of the rifle shows off the brass toeplate and triggerguard. The decorative toeplate is held in position by three small steel screws. In addition to being decorative the toeplate adds a level of protection to the wood, the toe commonly comes into contact with the ground when loading and cleaning. The brass triggerguard is pinned to the stock in traditional fashion. The raised lock panel molding continues around the lower border of the panel. The forearm has a very slight swell at the ramrod entry pipe. The forend is decorated with a double line incised molding along the edge of the ramrod channel. The muzzle end of the stock is relived to provide an easy grip on the ramrod and the muzzle cap acts to protect the end grain of the stock. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The brass square tail sideplate is accented with a few lines of hand engraving. Further back on the gun the classic squared cheek can be seen, providing the shooter with a comfortable platform to align sights. The cheek is fitted with a hand engraved silver star. To the rear of the cheek the stock is decorated with raised and incised C scrolls.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this Jim Chambers Golden Age flintlock. The expertly assembled lock has a heavy mainspring and good internals, it is properly tuned to work perfectly. The frizzen shows typical marks from use and the area around the vent has normal wear from firing and cleaning. The lock was finished to a dark brown and rubbed back to silvery gray patina to match the barrel. We recommend our #FLINT-ENG-6 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. The slotted stainless steel touch hole liner is properly positioned on the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. Below the lock a single trigger has been pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear.

This rifle has a well used appearance with a few handling marks on the stock, and a mellow patina on the brass furniture. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. A collaborative effort by a number well known gunmakers this rifle is well assembled from quality parts. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted.
