Hand made by J. Donelson this fine replica longrifle is patina finished to resemble the original longrifle shown in Rifles of Colonial America, Vol. 2 by George Shumway. This rifle features a 45-1/2" swamped brass barrel with a bright well maintained bore. Shaped in a strongly Germanic style, the rifle is stocked in curly maple and trimmed in brass furniture. This rifle includes a handmade sling. Trigger reach is 13-1/4" and the weight is 9.9 pounds.

The heart of this longrifle is the .50 caliber 45-1/2" swamped brass barrel, cut rifled with seven deep radius bottom grooves, in a slow twist, for use with a patched round ball. The muzzle has been slightly coned to ease loading. The swamped barrel is thick at the breech, tapering to a narrow waist and flaring back at the muzzle. The brass barrel exterior has aged to a dark mellow patina. A small brass post front sight is dovetailed 1" behind the muzzle. A two leaf rear sight is dovetailed 11-1/2" ahead of the breech. The flared tang is made of steel with a tang bolt that passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. Two small wedge keys and the swivel mount secure the barrel to the forearm.

The curly maple stock is hard and dense, ideal for raised and incised carving. The stock is stained whiskey brown with golden undertones, and oil finished. This attractive replica flint fullstock longrifle is trimmed in brass burnished to a satin sheen, which has aged to give the rifle the appearance of a well used antique. Used, the stock has a few handling marks, which add to the patina finish of the rifle. The buttplate comb has five flats, to echo the octagon theme of the barrel. The classic early buttplate has a pleasant curve, comfortable to aim, it engages your shoulder to minimize the recoil of this .50 caliber rifle. Correct steel screws have been used to mount the brass furniture, throughout. The early brass patchbox has no side panels and the rounded head is mounted with a single steel screw. The brass patchbox has a steel spring release protruding where it meets the buttplate. Press it toward the buttplate, to lift the lid open. The door opens to reveal a large cavity for storing flints, jags, or other cleaning accessories. Viewed from the top, this Germanic styled longrifle features a tapered comb, which is separated from the wrist by a skirt of raised carving, which flows to surround the wrist. Raised and incised carving surrounds the flared tang of the breech plug.

An incised border follows the edge of the buttplate from toe to heel. The toe of the rifle has a raised molding running from the toe to the stepped Germanic style wrist. No toeplate is installed and the toe will be one of the most common areas to pick up small marks from use. The brass triggerguard has filed flats on the front finial. The grip rail flares to a slightly curled end. The triggerguard is mounted with pins, fitted fore and aft. The triggerguard has a military style lug at the front and is fitted with a sling swivel, just as the original. The front swivel passes through the middle barrel lug and forearm. This rifle comes with a beautiful handmade woven sling. The leather ends of the sling are decorated with wolf paw prints. The sling is adjustable with an iron buckle. The wooden ramrod has a flared end to assist when loading. The hidden end has a long steel tapered tip that is threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The ramrod passes through handmade and filed brass pipes. A line of incised carving runs along the forearm accenting the ramrod channel. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. Our side view shows the sideplate with pointed tail and the carving around the lock panels. The cheek is a classic square Kentucky style cheek piece, with a molding carved along the bottom edge. Raised carving decorates the area behind the cheek piece.

Sure-fire ignition is provided by this modified Jim Chamber's Christian Spring lock. The frizzen spring has be altered to better match the original longrifle. These early Germanic style locks are found on colonial American longrifles. This lock has been lightly engraved in the style found on the original longrifle. The lock has been fire blued finished and displays a rainbow of colors throughout the plate. The wide curled single trigger has excellent internal geometry, with high leverage, and smooth release. Fast ignition is assured by a steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from the terrible slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

This rifle has a few handling marks from use, and the brass has aged to a dark mellow patina.
