This attractive Golden Age longrifle is stocked in cherry and trimmed in engraved brass furniture. The rifle has a Germanic influence with a swamped octagon barrel, and Chamber's large Siler flintlock. The cherry stock has a reddish tone that makes an excellent background against the dark blue on the flintlock and barrel, and the hand burnished brass furniture. Neatly assembled by contemporary maker Greg Park. The trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 9 pounds and it balances very nicely just ahead of the rear sight.

The .54 caliber swamped octagon Rice barrel has a 42" length. The swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. Cut rifled the bore has seven lands and radius grooves with a 1 in 66" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and clean.Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip. After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. The barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech, and a nickel silver blade front sight fitted behind the muzzle. The maker has sighted the rifle in at 75 yards.

The buttstock has attractive lines with a tall, nearly flat buttplate to help spread the felt recoil of the .54 caliber bore over a large area. The cherry stock is well finished with well executed clean crisp carving that is very striking due to the well cleaned backgrounds. Cherry is the softest of the hardwoods commonly used to build rifles, as such it will pick up small handling marks faster than walnut, or maple. In as as-new condition this rifle is free from any handling marks. An raised molding line runs down from the toe to the wrist. The brass patchbox is fitted without side panels on the door. The head and door have both been neatly hand engraved with folk art designs. The door is secured with a button release in the comb of the buttplate. Press the button to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other accessories.

The comb of the buttplate is hand engraved with a decorative scroll and potted plant design. The buttplate is not perfectly centered behind the tang. Rather, it is offset from the right hand shooter's cheek. This feature is called cast-off, and it places the right hand shooter's eye directly behind the line of sight, making this gun instinctive to point and shoot. The slender wrist flares into the lock panels that taper widest to the rear in early long gun fashion. A raised carved panel with a shell design surrounds the thumbnail tang of the breech plug. A single tang bolt passes through the tang and stock to engage the trigger plate below.

The bottom view shows the width of the comfortable buttplate. No toeplate has been installed on this rifle. The Germanic influenced triggerguard flares wide through the bow and is correctly mounted with two pins. The triggerguard has been hand engraved with a decorative border and potted plant designs. A raised molding flows from the brass entry pipe along the length of the forearm. The brass ramrod pipes support the tapered 3/8" diameter ramrod fitted with an iron tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. A brass muzzle cap has been installed to protect the end grain of the stock. The left side view shows the raised and incised carving that flows into the front of the square cheek with molded edge. To the rear of the cheek the stock is decorated with raised and incised carved scrolls. The brass sideplate fills the side panel in Germanic fashion. The sideplate is neatly hand engraved and polished bright. Two domed lock bolts engage the lock on the opposite side.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by a large Siler flint lock. Properly tuned and assembled the lock has a heavy set of springs that will ensure fast and reliable lock time. Finished a dark blue to match the barrel, the lock looks quite nice against the reddish backdrop of the cherry stock. We recommend a 3/4" knapped English flint, for use with this lock. Behind the pan the barrel has been installed with a stainless steel vent liner, helping to increase ignition time and reliability. The single trigger has been pinned high to provide a light, crisp release.

Neatly fit and finished this Golden Age flint longrifle is a wonderful example with a well finished cherry stock, hand engraved brass furniture, and a dark blue finish on the lock and barrel.
