This extraordinary flint .40 caliber Southern longrifle bears the signature of Chuck Edwards, whose fine longrifles are appreciated for their quality, artistic merit, and correct details. This fullstock flint rifle features a 44" Colerain swamped barrel, early Ketland lock by Jim Chambers, and sliding wooden patchbox. The rifle has been given a wonderful antique patina finish. Trigger reach is 13-1/2", to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is a modest 7.9 pounds. The rifle balances nicely in your hands, just behind the rear sight.

The .40 caliber swamped Colerain barrel is 44" long. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The muzzle is slightly cone to ease the loading of a patched roundball. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves with a 1 in 48" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The “radius groove rifling", Colerain uses eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. The barrel is finished to a pleasant silvery gray with brown speckling that gives the rifle the appearance of being an antique. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 12-3/4" from the breech. The iron blade front sight is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. The flat top of the barrel is signed *C. Edwards* No. 90. Simple scrolls are engraved around the rear and front sights, and also along the rear of the barrel near the breech plug. The left oblique flat is engraved Ecclesiastes 9:18, which states: "Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good." A fitting verse for a rifle.

Shaped from a blank this curly maple stock is stained to a warm brown with a golden undertone. The stock has been hand scraped smooth and finished with a rubbed oil finish. The finish has been rubbed back in areas to give a warm antique patina. Handling marks add to the antique patina. The mid-18th century brass buttplate is finished with five flats and a wedding band. The buttplate and brass furniture have a mellow aged patina. Ahead of the comb the wrist sweeps up to the breech of the gun where the barrel is fitted with a flared and pointed tang breech plug. Raised carving surrounds the tang. A silver inlay decorates the top of the wrist and is engraved LIBERTY '80. A thin line of incised carving accents the comb transition and flows down into the buttstock on both sides before terminating in a scroll design. The domed tang bolt passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. The barrel is retained to the forearm with four small pins.

The buttstock is fitted with a sliding wood patchbox. Press the latch up toward the door and it slides back to reveal two deep cavities, one is filled with patch lube, and the other is for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. No toeplate has been installed on the rifle and the flat slowly tapers forward from the toe to the triggerguard. The entire toe of the buttstock is decorated with two rows of carved scallops that run from the buttplate to the trigger guard. The same scallop design borders the buttplate on both sides and along the comb. A carved incised line runs along the bottom of the stock from the buttplate to the trigger guard that accents the toe line on both sides of the stock. The brass triggerguard is neatly shaped and is correctly secured with a screw in the rear and pin up front.

The wooden ramrod is mounted through two brass octagon ramrod pipes and matching entry pipe. The hidden end of the ramrod is fitted with a long brass tip that is threaded 8-32 to accept loading and cleaning accessories. The forearm swells slightly around the entry pipe and is decorated with incised scroll carving that transitions to a molding line that runs the entire length of the ramrod channel. A brass muzzle cap protects the endgrain of the stock. Notice how the slender lock panels top edge is a continuation of the line created by the side and off flat of the barrel. This ideal architecture gives the rifle a slender graceful appearance. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek piece for the shooter to comfortably align the sights. A thin line of incised scroll carving decorates the area behind the cheek. Two wire hooks are installed under the cheek piece that hold a wire vent pick. A simple brass sideplate is neatly engraved and stamped with the builder's mark CE. Two large dome head bolts retain the lock on the opposite side. Notice the neatly sculpted tear drop shape lock panels.

Ignition is provided by an early Ketland flint lock by Jim Chambers. This flat face English lock was typically found on American longrifles from the 1750-1780 period. Unlike Germanic locks, no molding is filed across the tail of the plate. The pan is rounded, not octagon. This pan has a bridle arm, typical of later English locks. Tuned for best performance, this lock will spark well, and put a shower of sparks in the pan. The lock is neatly inlet and finished to a silvery gray to match the barrel. Simple floral engraving decorates the plate. The single trigger is correctly positioned, and releases smoothly. Fast ignition is assured by the vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

Very well fit and finished this lovely longrifle will be a joy to shoot and own. Signed by a well known contemporary maker with a nice aged patina of a fine original.
