Stocked in cherry, this American longrifle is trimmed in brass furniture, and was assembled from a combination of antique and handmade parts during the start of the muzzleloader revival in the 1960's. The antique straight octagon .38 caliber barrel is mated to an antique Barber signed flintlock. The bore is bright and ready to shoot. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit todays average size shooter well. The rifle weighs 9.8 pounds.

The straight 15/16" octagon 40" long barrel is .38 caliber. The barrel is signed M. R???? at the breech. The barrel has aged to a dark brown patina with many dings and marks from use. The .38 caliber bore is bright and has been well maintained. A small semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 9-1/4" ahead of the breech. A low silver blade front sight is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. The long straight tang of the barrel is filed bright and still shows file marks. Two tang bolts pass through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. Three large pins retain the barrel to the forearm.

The cherry stock is stained a red tone and shows minor handling marks from use. This rifle is trimmed in brass furniture that has mellowed to a dark patina from use. The top view shows the long pointed heel of the buttplate that is retained with two steel screws. There are inletting gaps around the buttplate. The engraved brass toe plate can be seen from below. Two brass screws secure it to the stock. The button in the center of the toe plate releases the patchbox lid. The patchbox is neatly engraved and the lid opens to reveal a cavity to store extra flints. The patchbox is retained with brass screws.

The brass triggerguard, mounted with two brass screws has a long bow to easily accept gloved fingers. A long handmade entry pipe is fitted to the rifle, and two round brass ramrod pipes retain the 5/16" wooden ramrod. The ramrod is not fitted with threaded tips to accept loading or cleaning accessories. A short brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the wood. A small cheekpiece is shaped on the left side of the buttstock. The lock bolts pass through simple square brass sideplates that are inlet flush with the side panel.

Ignition is provided by an antique Barber flintlock. This 18th century lock still has a strong mainspring and securely holds the half and full cock notches. The lock has aged to a speckled silvery gray. We note inletting gaps around the lock plate in the wide panel. The single trigger has a heavy pull. A direct drilled touch hole is well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
