Stocked in curly maple, with nice tiger stripe figure, this lovely flint longrifle is made in the Bucks County, Pennsylvania style. The stock is carved with traditional Lehigh Valley incised designs. The rifle is trimmed in brass furniture with hand engraved side opening brass patchbox, also typical of this region. Hand made by contemporary maker Ron Luckenbill, this rifle is offered in excellent used condition with a bright .54 caliber bore. Trigger reach is 13" for todays average size shooter. This rifle weighs just 7.9 pounds.

The heart of the rifle is a .54 caliber swamped Colerain octagon barrel. The 44" swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist to reduce weight, and flares at the muzzle to align the sights. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves with a 1 in 56" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The “radius groove rifling", Colerain uses eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels. The .54 caliber bore is bright and ready to shoot. The exterior of the barrel is finished to a dark brown. The flat top rear sight is located 10-1/2" forward of the breech, while the silver blade front sight in a brass base is located 2" behind the muzzle. The top barrel flat is engraved R. Luckenbill, just before the rear sight.

Stocked in curly maple, the stock has a beautiful red tone with darker stripes of figure. Hand carved, hand shaped, neatly hand inlet, this is a unique flint longrifle. The smooth finish has been hand rubbed to a satin sheen. The forend is decorated with an incised carving, that runs from the lock panels along the entire length of the exposed ramrod, making this longrifle look even more sleek and slender. The classic Bucks County side opening patchbox is hand engraved with a flower and scrolls. The button release for the patchbox is a steel button under the tip of the toe plate. Depressing the tip of the toe plate allows the lid to snap open, a correct historical feature. The door securely latches shut. Beneath the door is a deep correctly cut cavity for patches, jags, or other accessories.

Shown from above the raised cheek piece is cleverly angled to recoil away from the shooter's face. The distinctive thumbnail comb of the buttplate can be seen, a classic feature of Bucks County rifles. The flared tang has a thumbnail finial and is surrounded by incised floral carving in the stock. A silver inlay is set just behind this carving on the top of the wrist, and it is engraved with the initials DMS. A single tang bolt engages the trigger plate below and four iron pins retain the barrel to the forearm.

The bottom view shows the engraved brass toeplate, which covers the hidden patchbox release plunger. The brass triggerguard with thumbnail finials can also be seen, and it is correctly mounted with a combination of screw and pin. All of the brass has a deep mellow patina, that compliments the red tone of the stock nicely. Notice how the raised carved lock panels are surrounded by a subtle but elegant carved border. The long skirt of the ramrod entry pipe is another classic feature from this school of rifle. It is retained with a combination of pins and small brads. It is engraved with floral scrolls. Three more rounded brass ramrod pipes secure the tapered ramrod. The end of the ramrod is fitted with an iron tip threaded 10-32 to accept loading and cleaning accessories. A brass muzzle cap protects the end of the forend. Our side view also shows the polished brass sideplate, with chamfered edges, retained by two fire blued lock bolts. Rococo carving decorates the area ahead of, and behind the cheek piece. The square Kentucky style cheek piece is inlaid with an engraved silver hunters star. The raised and incised carving, and engraving is well executed on this beautiful rifle.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this Jim Chambers’ Classic Ketland flint lock. This early 19th century flintlock is well assembled and will surely produce a shower of sparks to ignite your priming charge. Combine this lock with our hand knapped 3/4” English gun flints for best results. The engraved lock plate and cock are finished armory bright with a slight used patina. The lock finish compliments the barrel and stock finish perfectly. The R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire the lock set, or unset. The lock and triggers may be cocked or set in any sequence. Fast ignition is assured by the White Lightnin' stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

Very well fit and finished this lovely longrifle, done in the style of those guns from the Bucks County area, and will be a joy to shoot and own. Signed by a well known contemporary maker with regular use and handling this nice rifle will age to patina of a fine original. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted.
