This classic American flint longrifle is made in the style of the early work of Jacob Dickert, Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Numerous examples of Dickert's work can be found in the book Rifles of Colonial America, Volume 1 by Dr. George Shumway. Jacob Dickert traveled from Germany to America about 1750, he studied under an unknown master, learning the gunmaker's art. He worked in Lancaster County from 1769 until his death in the early 1820's. Dickert's early work, and this rifle as a result, are thought to have been influenced by the Moravian gun shop at Christian Spring and the shop's master, Andreas Albrecht whose, work also appears in Mr. Shumway's book.

Signed by Contemporary maker Mike Compton this Lancaster County longrifle is stocked in maple, trimmed in burnished nickel silver furniture fitted to a Jim Chambers Golden Age flintlock, Rice swamped octagon barrel, and double set triggers. Weighing in at 8.5 pounds, the rifle has a trigger reach of 13-3/4", well suited for today's average sized shooter.

The .54 caliber 44" swamped barrel by Rice Barrel Company is cut rifled with seven lands and grooves. Grooves are cut .016" deep, with round bottom rifling. Twist is 1 turn in 66 inches, ideal of a tightly patched round ball. The swamped barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. The swamped barrel gives the rifle a modest weight without being overly muzzle heavy. A nickel silver blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 11-1/2" ahead of the breech. The rifle balances just behind the rear sight.

After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip.

The dense maple stock of this long rifle is stained to a dark brown which contrasts the bright burnished nickel silver furniture. In mid-18th century style, the buttplate is wide, tall, nearly flat to help spread the felt recoil from the .54 caliber bore over a large area. The brass patchbox is shaped and engraved in the style of the antique. The small steel button on the comb of the buttplate actuates the patchbox release spring, allowing the door to snap open. Beneath the door is a deep cut cavity for storing flints, patches, or other shooting accessories. The flared tang of the breech plug is surrounded by attractive raised carving. The lock panels taper widest at the rear in early longgun fashion and shaped with a raised panel around the border.

A short nickel silver toeplate protects the toe, which is often in contact with the ground when loading and cleaning. The triggerguard is filed with crisp flats, and hand burnished to a satin sheen. The side panel is fitted with a long nickel silver sideplate with square tail common to Lancaster County rifles. Raised carving decorates the area ahead of, and behind the cheek. The cheek piece tapers wider at the rear, to recoil away from your cheek, with heavy loads. Recoil should not be a problem in this nice early longrifle. An raised carved line forms a molding from the trigger to the toe. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is mounted to the rifle through nickel silver ramrod pipes with paneled flats and raised rings. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories.

Ignition is provided by Jim Chambers' Golden Age flintlock. Finished with the same brown as the barrel, this Germanic influenced lock has a hand forged appearance and fits perfectly with the rest of the rifle. This lock is fitted with a heavy mainspring, for fast lock time and best sparking. Order a few of our 3/4" English gun flints, too. The double lever double set triggers are properly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
