Longrifles made in the region of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, are immediately recognizable. These rifles are long, thin, and graceful, with a low comb. We may never fully understand Bedford County rifles. We know that rifles were made in Bedford County as early as 1776, and many were made between 1800 and 1890. This span makes the Bedford County rifle contemporary to the Brown Bess musket, the Hawken plains rifle, the Colt revolver, and even the Winchester lever action.

This flintlock rifle is stocked in curly maple, and trimmed in brass furniture. The L&R flintlock has the classic Bedford appearance with a long thin plate with square tail. Offered in used condition, the .54 caliber barrel has a bright, well maintained bore. Trigger reach is 13" and the weight is 9.4 pounds, making this rifle suited to a today's average size shooter.

The .54 caliber 1" straight octagon barrel is finished a dark chocolate brown. Cut rifled by Colerain barrel company with six radius lands and grooves with a slow twist for patched round ball, the bore is bright and has been well maintained. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 11" ahead of the breech. A browned iron blade front sight is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle. The top barrel flat directly behind the muzzle is engraved 54. The top flat in front of the rear sight is engraved J.D. Belcher.

Stocked in curly maple, the stock displays modest figure from butt to muzzlecap. Trimmed in brass furniture, the furniture has developed a mellow patina from use. The brass buttplate has a modest curve to engage the shooter's shoulder. It has engraved checkering to help provide a secure shoulder grip. The buttstock is fitted with a classic "Q" finial patchbox common to Bedford County. The center of the "Q" has a nickel silver insert. A large cavity is cut to store extra patches or tools. The above view shows the pointed end of the straight tang of breech. The tang is secured to the stock with a wood screw and a bolt that passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. The barrel is held to the stock with four small pins. The brass toeplate is lightly engraved and retained with two steel screws. From below the brass triggerguard can be seen, and it is correctly pinned to the stock.

The rifle features carving along the transition from the comb and flows down through the wrist. On the opposite side the carving flows back towards the neatly shaped cheekpiece. From there it flows back behind the cheek in raised scrolls. Incised carving decorates the forearm and runs from the entry pipe to the muzzlecap. A brass muzzlecap protects the wood at the end of the stock. Two round brass ramrod pipes match the engraved rear entry pipe. The rifle is served with a hickory ramrod with a brass tip threaded 8-32 to accept loading and cleaning accessories. A brass sideplate is engraved with a federal eagle and has one flat top bolt that retains the lock on the opposite side of the stock.

The L&R Bedford County flintlock features the classic long plate with square tail design. In keeping with the late flint period styling, this lock has a semi-waterproof pan with rain gutters. The frizzen is flanged to seal tightly, an L&R feature. Notice the nice roller bearing on the frizzen, and matching cam on the frizzen spring. The lock is browned to match the barrel and shows bright spots in the finish from use. This rifle is fitted with a single lever double set trigger. A single lever double set trigger will only fire from the set position. The small screw between the trigger adjusts the trigger pull in the set position. An essential element for fast ignition, the vent is centered on the pan, correctly positioned above the bottom of the pan, to serve as a window, centered on the heat of the incandescent flash.

Used, with some small handling marks in the stock and patina on the brass, this big bore rifle will be perfect for your next hunt. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
