This North Carolina .40 caliber longrifle is trimmed in hand forged iron furniture and stocked in dark stained maple. The rifle is fitted with a Jim Chambers late Ketland flintlock, and many antique Carolina rifles are assembled with imported English locks. Not a low cost poor boy style rifle, this is a full dressed best quality Southern rifle. Neatly hand made by contemporary builder J. Alford. Trigger reach is 13-3/4", to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is a modest 7.4 pounds. The rifle balances nicely in your hands, just under the rear sight. This rifle is as-new having been test fired by the maker.

The .40 caliber 40" Rice barrel has a swamped profile, thickest at the breech for strength, tapering to a narrow waist, and flaring at the muzzle to put the sights on the same plane. Cut rifled, each bore has 7 lands and grooves. Grooves are cut .016" deep round bottom rifling with a 1 turn in 48 inch twist, for .40 caliber round ball. Made in the USA, Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are reamed, rifled, and "ball burnished" to a mirror finish, with a more uniform bore diameter than can be achieved with reaming alone. Match quality, no break-in period, no hand lapping is required. This barrel will shoot accurately from the very first shot. The rear sight is a flat top dovetailed 11" from the breech. The nickel silver blade front sight is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle.

Shaped from a blank this curly maple stock is stained to a dark brown with a golden undertone. The stock has been hand scraped smooth and finished with a rubbed oil finish. Maple is a very correct choice for stock wood, often found on antique Southern rifles. The stock is fitted with a modestly curved steel buttplate, and classic hand forged Southern style triggerguard. The buttstock is fitted with a rotating wood patchbox in the style of the Deep River school. The tapered door pivots on the screw at the center of the diamond inlay. Compress the latch toward the door and rotate the door down toward the toe to reveal a deep cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories.

No toeplate is fitted to this rifle. The hand forged triggerguard is neatly shaped and joined together. The 5/16" diameter tapered ramrod is mounted through three ramrod pipes, the ramrod entry pipe does not have a skirt in Appalachian fashion. The ramrod has been left a full 1-1/4" long for the rifle and extends well past the muzzle. The tapered brass ramrod tip is threaded 10-32 to accept loading and cleaning accessories. This tip has very thin walls and during installation you can feel it just squeezes past the forward lock bolt, and in fact it already has an area where the thin brass has been rubbed through to the wood below. Notice how the slender lock panels top edge is a continuation of the line created by the side and off flat of the barrel. This ideal architecture gives the rifle a slender graceful appearance. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek piece for the shooter to comfortably align the sights.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this Jim Chamber's late Ketland flintlock finished with a bone color case hardened finish. World famous, the Ketland family of English gun and flint lock makers opened an American branch, to supply our large market. Golden Age era locks were commonly found on American longrifles, circa 1790 to 1820. This lock is a wise choice, not only for its use of Siler internals with proven geometry and high reliability, but also for its correct style, and good sparking ability. We recommend our #FLINT-ENG-6 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance.

The single trigger is correctly positioned, and releases smoothly. Fast ignition is assured by the vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

This Carolina longrifle is very neatly assembled with hand forged furniture. The bore is bright in as-new condition. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
