This well made .50 caliber Allentown - Bethlehem Lehigh Valley longrifle is signed N. McKenzie on the top flat of the barrel. This classic golden age era fullstock flint rifle has a Herman Rupp, an early Allentown - Bethlehem, Pennsylvania rifle maker influence. This rifle has attractive shaping with a slender profile and well fitted parts, in "barn rifle" style the ramrod entry pipe and muzzle cap have been omitted and the rifle lacks any other ornamentation. .Stocked in maple, stained to a reddish brown with a golden undertone to best reveal the modest figure. The rifle is used with a few small handling marks on the stock and some wear on the silvery brown finish on the barrel. This rifle has a 13-1/2" trigger reach for todays average size shooter. The rifle weighs 6.3 pounds and points very naturally with the balance point below the rear sight.

This longrifle is fitted with a 42" swamped octagon barrel. The swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The .50 caliber bore is cut rifled with seven lands and radius grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight dovetailed 8-1/2" ahead of the breech. A nickel silver blade front sight with brass base is fitted behind the muzzle. The front sight is inverted.

One of the defining characteristics of the Bethlehem school is the "roman nose", which refers to the convex comb and the concave wrist to toe. A third arc extends from the bottom of the lock panel and creates a step at the rear of the triggerguard. Another unusual feature of found on Rupp rifles, the barrel typically has more than half their height above the edge of the barrel channel, which gives the forend a slender profile. The buttplate comb is inlet into the comb of the butt, and does not extend over the edges of the comb unlike many other schools of rifles. The oval wrist flares into the lock panels. The lock panels taper widest at the rear in early longrifle fashion.

The slender toe of the rifle fades into the lock panels. The forearm has a very slender profile that just wraps the barrel. The ramrod pipes are plain brass, undecorated. The 3/8" diameter ramrod has a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The ramrod has been left extra long and extends well past the muzzle. The lock panel is shaped with a slender profile. Two small washer style sideplates are fitted to support the lock bolts. The cheek piece is shaped with a molded edge.

Ignition is provided by a Jim Chambers late Ketland flintlock. World famous, the Ketland family of English gun and flint lock makers opened an American branch, to supply our large market. Neatly assembled, polished inside, and well tuned, this attractive Golden Age era flint lock replicates the locks often found on American longrifles, circa 1790 to 1820. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints, #FLINT-ENG-6 for best performance in this lock. The single trigger is correctly positioned, and releases smoothly. A stainless steel vent liner is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

With a few small marks from use this well made Pennsylvania "barn rifle" has slender shaping and a light weight due to the swamped barrel. The lucky buyer will own a treasure that will last a lifetime, and his heirs will raise toasts to his good taste, far into the future. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted.
