This well made .40 caliber Allentown - Bethlehem Lehigh Valley longrifle is unsigned, attributed to J. Rodgers. This classic golden age era fullstock flint rifle has a Herman Rupp an early Allentown - Bethlehem, Pennsylvania rifle maker influence. This rifle is decorated with incised carving, has attractive shaping with a slender profile and well fitted parts. Stocked in curly maple, stained to best reveal the nicely contrasting figure from muzzle to butt. The rifle is used with a few small handling marks and wear on the brown finish. This rifle has a 13-1/4" trigger reach for todays average size shooter. The rifle weighs 8.3 pounds and points very naturally with the balance point below the rear sight.

The .40 caliber Charles Burton manufactured barrel is 13/16" by 46" straight octagon. The barrel is fitted with a nickel silver blade front sight, and a regionally correct low rear sight. In keeping with a period correct appearance the rear sight is 12" from the breech, while the front is 2" behind the muzzle. The barrel has a silvery gray brown patina from handling, firing, and cleaning. The bore is bright and has been well maintained.

One of the defining characteristics of the Bethlehem school is the "roman nose", which refers to the convex comb and the concave wrist to toe. A third arc extends from the bottom of the lock panel and creates a step at the rear of the triggerguard. Another unusual feature of found on Rupp rifles, the barrel typically has more than half their height above the edge of the barrel channel, which gives the forend a slender profile. The buttplate comb is inlet into the comb of the butt, and does not extend over the edges of the comb unlike many other schools of rifles. The oval wrist flares into the lock panels. The lock panels taper widest at the rear in early longrifle fashion. The brass patchbox has a brass button latch at the rear upper edge. Lift the latch toward the heel of the buttplate to release the door under spring pressure. Beneath the door is a cleaning jag and small antler handled pan brush. The door of the patchbox is framed by incised moldings in a vine design.

The slender toe of the rifle fades into the lock panels. The forearm has a very slender profile that just wraps the barrel. The lock panels are framed with incised moldings. Additional incised moldings extend down the forearm and surround the skirt of the ramrod entry pipe with a Fluer de Lys design. The ramrod pipes are shaped with small raised rings. The 5/16" diameter ramrod has a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The muzzle end of the stock is fitted with a formed sheet brass muzzle cap. The lock panel is shaped with a slender profile. The sideplate is shaped with sweeping curves and a pointed tail. Incised lines run from the toe to the triggerguard. The cheek piece is shaped with a molded edge and decorated with incised scrolls.

Ignition is provided by a Jim Chambers late Ketland flintlock. World famous, the Ketland family of English gun and flint lock makers opened an American branch, to supply our large market. Neatly assembled, polished inside, and well tuned, this attractive Golden Age era flint lock replicates the locks often found on American longrifles, circa 1790 to 1820. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints, #FLINT-ENG-6 for best performance in this lock. The single trigger is correctly positioned, and releases smoothly. A direct drilled vent hole is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
