This rifle is patterned after trade rifles made by J.J. Henry for the American Fur Company during the 1820-1840 period. This flint lock Lancaster pattern trade rifle is .50 caliber, stocked in maple, and trimmed in brass. This longrifle would make a great hunting rifle and is appropriate for many frontier and native historical portrayals. In new condition, this rifle is assembled with a light patina finish on the lock, stock, and barrel. Constructed by contemporary builder Steve Losey, the barrel is signed and numbered on the top flat. Trigger reach is 13-1/2", to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 7.1 pounds, so you can carry it all day.

The 42" swamped octagon Rice Barrel Company gives this longrifle a modest weight, making it easy to handle. The barrel is finished to a speckled gray-brown patina, and the bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The .50 caliber bore is cut rifled with seven lands and grooves. The flat bottom grooves are cut .016" deep, with a 1 turn in 66" for a tightly patched round ball. Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip.

After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. The semi buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 12-1/4" ahead of the breech. Shooters with corrective lenses or "older" eyes will find the extra distance from the breech easier to use. A tall nickel silver blade front sight with brass base is dovetailed 1-3/4" behind the muzzle. The top flat of the barrel is signed S Losey #88 near the breech.

The curly maple Lancaster-style stock has an oiled finish and a brass patchbox patterned after those found on J.J. Henry American trade rifles. The patch box works very well and has a secure latch. Our top view shows the profile of the classic Lancaster stock. The brass butt has a wedding band transition to the comb. A single lock bolt passes through the flared tang to engage the trigger plate below. Three steel pins retain the barrel to the forearm. The bottom view shows that no toeplate is installed on this rifle. The brass trigger guard is correctly pinned to the stock. The 3/8" diameter wooden ramrod passes through two brass ramrod pipes decorated with rings and a matching entry pipe. A simple brass muzzle cap band is fitted near the muzzle, the end grain of the stock is exposed. All of the brass has a mellow hand finished patina. The ramrod does not have any tips fitted for cleaning or loading accessories, and we recommend our #RAMROD-C-44-10 to service this rifle. The buttstock has a simple square cheek carved into it. The lock bolt passes through a steel washer to engage the lock on the opposite side. We note that the lock bolt is angled through the stock.

The R.E. Davis Ketland style flintlock is browned to match the finish of the barrel and furniture. A highly refined and complex lock, this design incorporates many of the features invented by London's best gunmakers during the late flint period, prior to 1830. The “full waterproof pan" is made with rain gutters cut to drain any water away from the pan. The cock's jaws have been tipped down to throw sparks directly into the pan. The erect frizzen snaps over a roller bearing on the end of the frizzen spring, which is retained by an inside screw threaded into a blind hole in the bullet shaped spring finial. The single trigger is pinned high to provide a smooth release.

Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

This .50 caliber rifle has a modest weight that makes it easy to carry and handle. Shaped from a blank with a great patina finish, and signed on the top flat of the barrel by contemporary builder Steve Losey. This J.J.
