This longrifle is styled after the Lancaster County Pennsylvania rifles made in the early 1800's. This .40 caliber longrifle would make a great hunting rifle and is appropriate for many frontier and native historical portrayals. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. Trigger reach is 13-1/2" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 8.1 pounds. As-new, this rifle is unfired.

The heart of the rifle is a 42" by 13/16" straight octagon .40 caliber Green Mountain barrel that has been polished bright. The cut rifled barrel has eight equal lands and grooves with a 1 in 48" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The muzzle is lightly crowned and the bore has been well maintained. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight dovetailed 8" ahead of the breech and a silver blade front sight with brass base is dovetailed 1" behind the muzzle. The barrel is retained to the stock with three steel pins.

The maple Lancaster-style stock has an oiled finish with a few light handling marks from use. The brass patch box is shaped with a daisy head finial head and is hand engraved in a traditional Lancaster County style that looks very appropriate on this rifle. The lid is opened by depressing a domed brass button set into the comb of the buttplate. The patch box works very well and has a secure latch. A large cavity is cut below to store patches or small accessories.

Our top view shows the profile of the classic Lancaster stock. The brass butt plate comb is filed with three flats and a has a wedding band transition to the stock. The flared tang of the breech plug has a single bolt that passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. The short brass toeplate is retained with one steel wood screw. The brass triggerguard is correctly pinned to the stock. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the forearm. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is mounted through octagon ramrod pipes with ringed ends. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. The maple stock has a square cheek piece carved into the left side with a molded edge. Raised carving extends from the front of the cheek, around the comb to create a transition line between the wrist and the comb, and terminates on the right side of the stock with a scroll design. The brass side plate is a classical early 19th century Lancaster County style. The lock is retained by two steel lock bolts.

This rifle is fitted with a classic European flintlock. Locks of this design would typically be found on longrifles from the regions with strong trade to continental Europe. Europe recognized the American market for flint locks, and supplied the American frontier gun makers from the larger gun making factories in England, especially Birmingham and London; from France, especially Tulle and St. Etienne; from Liege, Belgium, and from the industrial river valleys of Germany.

America's master gun makers, journeymen gunsmiths, and apprentices were certainly required to learn the essential skills of forging, filing, and tempering of lock parts. A few became skilled at lock work, and created many of the flint locks they used. Yet the demands on the gun maker's time, and the ready supply of well made imported flint locks, allowed many American longrifles to be fitted with imported (trade) flint locks from respected European makers. The Ketland family was one such name.

This classic European flint lock is a refined early style lock, with a pointed tail on the lock plate. A decorative molding has been filed across the lock plate ahead of the tail. The flat faced plate features chamfered edges, to echo the octagon theme of the barrel. The plate is made with an integral pan and a bridle arm to support the frizzen pivot screw.

Double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire in any sequence; you may cock the lock or set the trigger in any combination. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel White Lightnin' vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
