This German Jaeger is stocked in curly maple and trimmed in browned iron furniture with brass inlay accents. The maple stock is stained to a warm brown to best display the figure over the length of the stock. The buttstock and forearm are accented with raised carving and decorative moldings. The R.E. Davis lock finished to a dark brown to match the furniture and barrel. The large caliber 32" straight octagon barrel makes this rifle a handy length, exactly what a German hunter would find desirable. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" and this rifle weights 9.8 pounds.

The heart of the Jaeger is its 32” by 1" straight octagon .54 caliber barrel by the now defunct Montana Barrel Company. The .54 caliber bore is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and appears to have been well maintained. The exterior of the barrel has been finished to a dark brown and signed on the top flat F. Fusco. A Germanic style rear sight is dovetailed far ahead of the breech at 16", which shooters with "older" eyes or corrective lenses will find easier to use. The front sight is a bone blade mounted to a steel dovetail base fitted behind the muzzle in Germanic fashion. The bone sight is approximately 1/8" wide and the rear sight has an appropriately wide square notch.

Deriving its name from the German word Jaeger, which means "hunter." These rifles often have short, large caliber, barrels making them easy to carry afield. This Jaeger rifle is used with some small scattered handling marks as well as a few speckles of patina on the brown finish. The finish on the buttstock has a few dull streaks, caused by water with black powder residue escaping from the breech and contacting the finish during cleaning

Like many Jaeger style rifles, the buttstock has a very stout appearance with a wide, tall, nearly flat buttplate to help spread the felt recoil over a large area. The iron buttplate has a long extended tapered and stepped comb. Both sides of the stock have been fitted with a engraved fish inlay shaped to fit along the inside edge of the heel of the buttplate. The stock is shaped with step at the wrist in Germanic rifle fashion. An incised molding extends from the toe to the step at the wrist. The toe of the stock is fitted with a short iron toeplate to protect it while in contact with the ground during loading and cleaning. The triggerguard has a long open bow to accept the Germanic style double lever double set triggers. The triggerguard is shaped with a mid-18th century front finial and is securely mounted with screws at both ends. A raised carved molding frames the front finial.

The lock panels taper toward the front in early longrifle fashion. The front edge of the lock panel is accented with a panel of incised carving. The ramrod pipes are a bulbous design and accept the 3/8" diameter ramrod. The ramrod does not have any provisions for threaded accessories. A molding decorates the forearm along the edge of the ramrod channel. The muzzle end of the stock is protected with a traditional horn muzzle cap. The sideplate fills the side panel is Germanic style. The raised carving along the front edge of the comb flows into the square cheek piece. Additional raised carving extends from the rear of the cheek piece.

This large flint lock by R. E. Davis has a distinctly Germanic style with large flat faced flint cock. This early lock design has the so-called “banana” lock plate design since the lock plate curves down toward the wrist. Later locks tend to be a bit more straight. The frizzen spring is filed to a fancy shape, very handsome, retained by a hidden blind screw. Crisp flats on the integral pan mimic and amplify the octagon theme of the barrel. Notice that the pan has no bridle arm to support the frizzen pivot screw. Instead, a massive shouldered pivot screw supports the frizzen, which tightly fits the pan. Order a dozen of our 7/8" English gun flints, for best performance in this lock.

This lock includes:
  • Additional slimmer version of cock, top jaw, and screw
  • Spare mainspring
The traditional Germanic style double lever double set triggers have been properly tuned to be set and fired in any combination. You may cock the lock before or after you set the triggers. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

A stainless steel vent liner with a screw driver slot has been fitted. The vent is well positioned both horizontally and vertically on the pan. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

If you desire a Jaeger rifle then consider this piece. Used this rifle has a bright well maintained bore with some normal wear on the stock and barrel finish typical of loading, firing, and cleaning. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
