This classic American flint longrifle is made in the style of one of the best Lancaster County gun makers. Modeled after the work of Jacob Dickert, it is stocked in curly maple, trimmed in brass, and is similar to the many longrifles built before and during the American Revolution. Mr. Hanchett appears to have based this gun after a particular work of Jacob Dickert, found in James R. Johnston's book, Kentucky Rifles & Pistols: 1750-1850.

The .50 caliber, 7/8" octagon by 42" long Colerain barrel has been draw filed smooth and finished to a dark brown. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves with a 1 in 56" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The “radius groove rifling", Colerain uses eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling.

Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Founded by two entrepreneurs, Scott Keller and Scott Kelly were tutored by Bob Paris, the famous rifle barrel maker who was first to perfect the technique for production of correct swamped barrels. The rear sight is located 10" forward of the breech while the front sight, a classic brass base with nickel silver blade, is located 1-3/4" behind the muzzle.

This attractive flint fullstock longrifle is trimmed in brass, which has been polished to a hand burnished bright finish. It will develop the rich patina of age, with regular use. The curly maple stock has a warm brown with a golden undertone. Incised carving decorates the wrist. A raised molding extends from the toe to the rear of the triggerguard creating a slimming effect. The early pre-Revolutionary War era buttplate is wide, flat, and comfortable to aim. It engages your shoulder to minimize the recoil of the .50 caliber bore. This early pre-Revolutionary War era stock has a trigger reach of 13-1/2" for today's average size shooter, and weighs in at just under 9 pounds. The flared thumbnail tang of the rifle is accented with a surrounding raised carved Fleur-de-lis. The tang, like the barrel, has a nice dark brown finish. The barrel is unmarked except for the top flat that has been stamped JH, the makers initials, and 2016, the year of production.

The brass patchbox has a daisy finial, a typical motif found on Lancaster County rifles. Mounted with iron screws, all of which are neatly fitted with the slots aligned. The patchbox is hand engraved in a traditional folk art style. A push-button release, in the comb of the buttplate behind the screw holding the plate, allows the patchbox lid to snap open smartly, when pressed firmly. Open the patchbox by depressing the button just ahead of the buttplate heel. Beneath the door is a deep cut cavity, with bit and brace marks on the bottom, for storing your patches, extra flints, jags, worms, and whatever else you can imagine to place inside.

The brass triggerguard has three distinct flats on the triggerguard bow, and the grip rail flares at the end. The triggerguard is anchored with a traditional dowel pin at front and rear. Note also the brass toeplate that has been secured with two steel screws. The toeplate has also been lightly engraved, to add a touch of style to this area of the gun. With their burnished finish, the triggerguard and toeplate are representative of the rest of the furniture on the rifle. A raised and incised carved Fluer de Lys surrounds the skirt of the ramrod entry pipe. The ramrod channel has a raised molding along the edge. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories. This side view shows the square tailed Lancaster County, Pennsylvania style brass sideplate, retained by two polished and blued lock bolts. The cheek is fitted with a engraved nickel silver hunter's star. The raised and incised carving that decorates the area around the cheek of the rifle is a very well executed. The rococo back to back double C pattern is a classic example of Jacob Dickert's original work and a fine addition to this longrifle

Sure-fire ignition is provided by a Jim Chambers Golden Age flint lock. This lock captures the Prussian styling used on many American longrifles. Most flint locks were imported from England or Europe, for use by American gunmakers. Finished brown, the lock matches the barrel nicely. The lock plate stands well above the wood panel, and is chamfered along each edge, creating the shadow line around the lock plate.

Germanic influenced double lever double set triggers are tuned to fire in any sequence; you may cock the lock or set the trigger in any combination. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
