The unique style of Southern Mountain rifles originated from the Western Carolinas into Eastern Tennessee during the late 18th and early 19th century. This Tennessee Mountain rifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in browned iron furniture. Antique Southern Mountain rifles are ofter trimmed in hand forged iron furniture, with hardware store locks. This rifle is fitted with a R.E. Davis late Ketland flintlock, and single trigger. This nice example of a Southern Mountain rifle is well fitted with slender shaping. Assembled by contemporary builder G. B. Nelson.

The .44 caliber 41" barrel is 7/8" straight octagon. The .44 caliber bore is rifled with five wide lands and narrow grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. We recommend our .433" pure lead round ball, patched with .015" Ox-Yoke patching, lubricated with our Mink Oil tallow patch grease, if you require best accuracy. A semi buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 8-1/2" ahead of the breech. A brass blade sight with integral base is dovetailed behind the muzzle. This rifle is stocked with a 14" trigger reach, for a average size shooter. This trim longrifle weighs only 8 pounds, and will be a pleasure to carry afield.

The maple stock is finished to a warm brown with a hint of golden undertone. This mountain rifle is a full dress Tennessee rifle with buttplate, entry pipe, and muzzle cap. All of the iron furniture; triggerguard, ramrod pipes, and muzzle cap are finished to a dark matte brown. The rifle is fitted with a slender buttplate with a long comb and a modest curve to engage the shooter's shoulder. The buttplate screws are neatly aligned with the barrel. The triggerguard has a hand forged appearance with a long bow and offset grip rail. The triggerguard is securely mounted to the stock with screws in traditional fashion. The barrel is breeched with a long lollipop tang that extends down the wrist. Both tang bolts engage the triggerplate below. Two small steel screws retain the toeplate. The toeplate protects the fragile toe area, which is otherwise often susceptible to dents and chips during loading and cleaning. The forearm and forend both have slender shaping that wraps the barrel all the way to the muzzle. The end grain is protected with a browned steel muzzle cap. The 5/16" diameter ramrod is fitted with a steel tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. Two lock bolts are mounted through separate sideplates. The forward sideplate is a tipped tear drop, The rear lock bolt is a lozenge shape. The forward lock bolt is notched to clear the ramrod, so if the lock must be removed - remove the ramrod first to prevent interference. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek piece.

The late Ketland flint lock, by R. E. Davis, features a roller bearing on the frizzen spring, waterproof pan, and is finished to contrast the barrel and match the iron furniture. The large gun flint points directly into the pan, showering it with sparks. A highly refined and complex lock, this design incorporates many of the features invented by London's best gunmakers during the late flint period, prior to 1830. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints #FLINT-ENG-6. The builder notes that this lock seems to prefer thicker flints. The trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear.

Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
