This fine quality contemporary longrifle is stocked in very dense piece of maple that allows for crisp raised carving. The stock is stained to a warm brown tone and trimmed in brass furniture accented with traditional engraved designs on the sideplate. The rifle is fitted with a large Siler flintlock with bright finish and hand engraved accents. The .54 caliber swamped octagon barrel gives this rifle a modest weight without being overly muzzle heavy. Fit, finish, engraving, and raised carving are all finely executed. New, unfired, the barrel is signed by contemporary builder Michael Hayes. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 10.6 pounds with the balance point just behind the rear sight.

The heart of the rifle is a .54 caliber 42-3/4" swamped octagon barrel by Sharon Barrel Company. Many serious shooters mourned the passing of the Sharon Barrel Company, and the late Hall Sharon. The swamped barrel is a custom profile with a 1-1/8" breech tapering to narrow waist and flaring at the muzzle to align the sights. The .54 caliber bore is as-new cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The exterior of the barrel is finished to a smooth dark brown. A hand made rear sight is dovetailed 12-1/4" ahead of the breech. Shooters with "older" eyes or corrective lenses will often find this extra distance from the breech easier to use. The front sight is a nickel silver blade with a brass base dovetailed behind the muzzle.

The maple stock displays a small amount of figure, but was primarily selected to allow for clean crisp carving. The rifle is trimmed in brass furniture with a hand burnished appearance. The buttstock is fitted with a tall, wide, buttplate is early longrifle fashion. The buttplate comb is shaped with five broad flats with a wedding band transition to the comb. Crisp raised carving defines the transition from wrist to comb. A molding from the toe to the triggerguard creates a slimming effect. The buttstock is fitted with a sliding wood patchbox. This well fitted patchbox is shaped with a bullet shaped door with incised moldings and shell design for thumb relief at the base. Compress the spring toward the lid and slide the door to the rear to reveal a deep cavity for storing flints jags, or other shooting accessories.

The lock panels taper widest at the rear in early long gun fashion and are framed with a raised border that transitions into a raised and incised carved beaver tail . The area around the flared tang is expertly raised carved with a smooth clean background, the sign of a sharp tools and a skilled hand. The sides of the forearm are raised and incised carved with a checkered pattern that continues as a molding along the upper edge of the barrel channel, which is a regional decoration found on some Virginia longrifles.

The toe of the rifle tapers in toward the lock panels. The triggerguard is neatly hand filed with crisp flats. The triggerguard is mounted with a combination of pin and screw in early fashion. The hand made ramrod entry pipe is shaped with a tapered skirt and octagon body with raised rings. The two forward ramrod pipes are shaped in a similar fashion with raised rings and a octagon body. The tapered ramrod is fitted with a steel tip with 8-32 threads for loading accessories. If you plan to fire this fine rifle. We suggest a separate loading and cleaning ramrod to save wear on this well fitted ramrod. The side panel is fitted with a English influenced sideplate with a spade shaped tail. The brass sideplate is nicely hand engraved. Metal to wood fit is excellent with tight inletting. Raised carving extends down the wrist into flowing scrolls. The square cheek is shaped with a molded edge. Beautifully raised carved C scrolls extend from the rear of the cheek. All of the carving is clean and crisp with smooth clean backgrounds.

This rifle is fitted with a large Siler flintlock that has been expertly hand polished and engraved. The lock has a strong Germanic appearance with a octagon pan and pointed tail. The plate has been shaped with a stepped molding across the tail and the frizzen spring has been altered to an inside mount design, as found on many Germanic locks. We recommend using our #Flint-ENG-6 best English 3/4" flints, hand knapped by Mr. Tom Fuller.

The single trigger is pinned high to provide a light crisp release. The vent liner is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, for fastest ignition. Fitted with a deep internal cone this liner is designed to bring the main charge close to the priming charge, producing fast ignition. The area around the vent shows typical wear in the brown finish from firing and cleaning.

A fine example of a contemporary longrifle with a maple stock with expertly executed raised carving, and fine engraving on the lock and brass furniture. Signed by contemporary builder Michael Hayes.
