Stocked in hard and dense sugar maple from the Northwestern corner of Pennsylvania, the stock has attractive fine line tiger stripe figure, faint, but very pleasing when viewed in bright daylight. The W.E. Rayl .40 caliber swamped octagon barrel gives the rifle a modest weight without being overly muzzle heavy. many shooters consider .40 caliber the ideal choice for serious offhand 100 yard target shooting in primitive competition. The stock is decorated with crisp clean carving and the brass furniture is polished bright.

The W.E. Rayl .40 caliber 42" swamped barrel is cut rifled with a 1 in 48" twist, ideal for a .40 caliber patched round ball. The previous owner reports fine accuracy with 40 grains of FFFg for target, or 60 grains of FFg for hunting. The muzzle is crowned, and the bore of this fine barrel appears to have been well maintained.

The buttstock has the angular lines of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and the triggerguard has the style of J.P.Beck from Lebanon Township. The brass buttplate is wide, tall, nearly flat to help spread the felt recoil over a large area. An incised line forms a molding which runs from the triggerguard to the toe. The comb rises above the wrist, with raised carving behind the wrist, creating the attractive cameo wrist. Lock panels are simple and attractive. Several other well cut examples of Mr. Slusser's artistic raised carving are found on this light weight longrifle.

The .40 caliber bore is the legal minimum for deer hunting in Minnesota, and several other states. The primitive style fixed sights allow this rifle to be used in primitive match competition, and serious offhand flint rifle match shooting.

Trigger reach is 14-1/8" and this rifle weighs 9.5 pounds.

Our top view shows the paneled flats of on the buttplate comb. Notice that the buttplate is very slightly offset away from the shooter's cheek, not directly behind the barrel. This feature is called cast-off. It places the right hand shooter's eye directly behind the line of sights. This rifle will be instantly comfortable, and instinctive for snap shooting at game, for a right hand shooter.

The bottom view shows the wide buttplate, correct for a fine classic Lancaster County flint longrifle, and very comfortable for the match shooter or hunter. The toe is protected with a brass toeplate with a thumbnail finial. The polished brass triggerguard has tapered flats on the bow, and decorative notches on the front final in the style of J.P. Beck.

The forearm is decorated with raised carving around the ramrod entry pipe and an incised molding extends the length of the ramrod channel. The ramrod is fitted with a 3/8" brass tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories.

The large Siler flint lock has a Germanic influence with a pointed tail with vertical molding, and flats on the pan. The frizzen on this lock is fitted with a roller and the frizzen spring has a decorative final. The lock is well tuned to throw sparks directly into the pan,. for sure-fire ignition. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for use with this lock.

This rifle is fitted with R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers. The triggers are properly tuned to fire from either the set or unset position. You may adjust the pressure required for the set trigger. The small screw between the triggers controls the engagement of the set trigger, inboard lightens the trigger.

The breech is fitted with a hex wrench installed stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. Your hex wrench will easily remove it for cleaning. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

This view shows the polished brass sideplate, and cheek view of this attractive but simple longrifle. Well made, using best quality parts, by well recognized contemporary gunmaker, Mr. William J. Slusser. Well executed intaglio carving, rococo swirls and scrolls, decorate either side of the cheek piece. Trimmed in brass, the inletting, fitting, and finishing are excellent.
