This classic American flint longrifle captures the style of one of the best Lancaster County gun makers. Modeled after the work of Jacob Dickert, it is stocked in curly maple, trimmed in brass. Jacob Dickert traveled from Germany to America about 1750, he studied under an unknown master, learning the gunmaker's art. He worked in Lancaster County from 1769 until his death in the early 1820's. He was an artist, producing decorated relief carved flint longrifles for his many customers. He also produced rifles for the Continental Army during the American Revolution. This lightly used rifle is by contemporary builder M. Markey is signed on the top flat of the barrel. Trigger reach is 14" to fit todays average size shooter. Weight is 8.7 pounds.

The 44" swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The .50 caliber bore is cut rifled with six grooves with a caliber appropriate 1 in 56" slow twist for patched round ball. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six "round bottom" grooves. Called "radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost. The barrel is finished to a silvery brown The swamped octagon barrel has been signed on the top flat by the builder, Michael Markey No. 1002. A flat top rear sight sits 8-1/2" forward of the breech while the front sight is positioned 1-1/2" behind the muzzle.

This attractive flint fullstock longrifle is trimmed in brass, which has been burnished to a satin finish with a patina finish applied to simulate regular use and normal handling. The buttplate is wide, flat, and comfortable to aim. It engages your shoulder to minimize the recoil of the .50 caliber bore. The buttplate comb is shaped with five flats and a wedding band. A raised and incised panel surrounds the flared tang of the breech plug. The panel transitions into the raised border around the lock and side panels. A single blued tang bolt engages the triggerplate below.

The brass patchbox has a daisy finial, a typical motif found on Lancaster County rifles. Mounted with fire blued screws, the patchbox has been hand engraved with a traditional folk art appearance. The door has a push button release just ahead of the heel of the buttplate. Beneath the door is deep cut cavity, for storing flints, jag, or other shooting accessories.

Our bottom view of the rifle shows off the brass toeplate and triggerguard. The decorative toeplate is held in position by a pair of small screws. In addition to its decorative factor the toeplate adds a level of protection to the wood, the toe commonly comes into contact with the ground when loading and cleaning and the toeplate helps protect it at these times. The brass triggerguard is pinned to the stock in traditional fashion. A small amount of raised carving decorates the forearm behind the thumbnail skirt of the ramrod entry pipe. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded 10-32 for loading and cleaning accessories.

A backside view of the rifle shows off the large brass sideplate that has been used on the rifle. Held in place by a pair of lock bolts, the sideplate has been decoratively engraved with a folk art style to match the patchbox. Further back on the gun the classic squared cheek can be seen, providing the shooter with a comfortable platform to align sights. The cheek is angled to the rear, to recoil away from your face. A line of raised carving flows down from the cheek before transitioning into scrolls. The carving has a few areas of fuzziness. The cheek is decorated with a nickel silver hunters star. Raised and incised opposing C scrolls decorate the area of the stock behind the cheek.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by this Jim Chambers' Golden Age flint lock. The expertly assembled lock has a heavy mainspring and good internals, it is properly tuned to work perfectly. Unfired the frizzen is unmarked. Finished bright to contrast the stock and dark silvery brown on the barrel. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock.

The White Lightnin' touch hole liner is properly positioned on the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

Below the lock a set of double lever, double set triggers has been installed. Properly tuned and adjusted the triggers can be fired from either the set or unset position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. But the set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

This longrifle is very lightly used with only a few small handling marks. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
