Used, this percussion Santa Fe Hawken half-stock rifle was built by Aldo Uberti & Co. The rifle is stocked in walnut and is trimmed in iron furniture. The bore is bright, but does have scattered light pitting mostly towards the muzzle. The mainspring has been replaced and two additional holes were drilled in the lock plate. Weighing in at 9.2 pounds the rifle has a trigger reach of 14-7/8" making it well suited for today's larger size shooter, someone over 6'0" in height with a long reach.
The barrel measures 31-3/4" in length and has a dark brown finish with some wear and scattered speckling near the breech. Bore diameter is .530" on this rifle, a .53 caliber and not a .54 as marked. These rifles are recommended to use a .520" swagged round ball, combined with a lubricated shooting patch. The bore is bright, but we note some scattered light pitting mostly towards the muzzle. We could not feel these pits when we ran a tightly fitted cleaning patch through the bore. A semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 6" ahead of the breech. A handmade steel blade front sight has been dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle. The top flat is stamped A. Uberti & Co. Gardone V.T. Italy. The right oblique flat is marked 269 and 54 CAL just ahead of the breech. The left flat is stamped with various proof marks. This rifle has the side panel dished to access the breech clean-out screw.
The walnut stock has a warm brown coloration and is finished to a satin sheen. The stock has handling marks and a few bigger dings from normal field use. Trimmed in iron furniture the buttplate heel shows wear, which is typical on this area. The escutcheons for keys are nickel silver, as is the forend cap. Ahead of the comb, the wrist is reinforced by the long tang of the hooked breech system. Two bolts engage the tang and pass through the stock to connect with the long triggerplate below, this system sandwiches the wrist and the resulting strength makes it very hard to break. A hard fall from your horse will probably not break this rifle, while you are hunting the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, many days by horseback and keel-boat from Sam Hawken's gun shop in Saint Louis. Strength made the Hawken rifle famous! The factory ramrod has been replaced with a sturdy 7/16" tapered hickory ramrod, with iron tip threaded to accept our 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories. The single lock bolt, and iron tear drop escutcheon, fitted flush with the side panel, are classic features of a half-stock Hawken plains rifle, from the 1835 - 1845 era.
Cherry Corners Gun Shop, of Lodi, Ohio, recreated this T. Gibbons Hawken percussion lock, for their kit, which later became the Ithaca Hawken rifle kit. Navy Arms acquired these patterns, and the Santa Fe Hawken Rifle was made by the famous Aldo Uberti, of Italy. This is a correct Hawken lock for this fur trade era percussion rifle. We note the mainspring is a non-factory replacement and two additional holes were drilled in the lock plate. The lock functions correctly. A hardened iron 1/4-28 nipple for No. 11 percussion caps is installed in the breech. Double lever double set triggers may be set, or the lock cocked, in any sequence. Triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting, or cold weather hunting with gloved fingers.
