Used, this patina finished left-hand replica is an Early English Trade Gun, circa 1750 - 1760, as made in London. French & Indian War era re-enactors will like this early style trade gun. Made for the export trade, this variation of the North West Gun features three sideplate screws, a flush mounted early serpent sideplate, an iron triggerguard, and a brass buttplate in fowling gun fashion. This trade gun is decorated with brass tacks, features a faux rawhide wrist repair, and has a wonderful patina finish. With an overall weight of 5.5 pounds the gun has a trigger reach of 13-1/8”, nicely arranged for today’s average size left-hand shooter.

The 36" barrel is tapered octagon, with two wedding bands, and is tapered round to the muzzle. The top flat of the barrel has the famed fox-in-circle mark stamped near the breech. The bore is .730" diameter, allowing it to be used with either a ball and patch, or shot with cards and wad. We offer 12 gauge (.73 caliber) wads, cards, and shot for wing shooting. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. This smoothbore has no rear sight, and it qualifies for the NMLRA Trade Gun Match rules, shooting both round balls at paper targets, and shot at clay birds. A rounded brass blade front sight is soldered 1-1/2" behind the muzzle. The barrel as a textured brown finish, which adds to the wonderful patina of this gun.

Stocked in dense black walnut, this fusil has a rich dark color with an aged dry appearance. The stock has many small handling marks and a faux rawhide wrist repair, which further adds to the patina look of this trade gun. The gun is fit with fowling gun hardware and has a strong resemblance to a British Officer's fusil. The brass fowling gun buttplate, shaped much like a French Type “D” trade gun buttplate has aged to a dark patina. Perhaps this English gun was an attempt to satisfy French Canadian customers. The left side of the buttstock is decorated with domed brass tacks, along with the left side of the forearm.

The bottom view of the gun shows off the rounded toe and iron triggerguard. The forged iron triggerguard is surface mounted and retained with the inverted tang screw at front, and two slotted iron screws in the rear grip of the triggerguard. The tang bolt installed from the triggerguard into the tang is a correct detail often found on English made North West Trade Guns. There is no ramrod entry pipe, only two ribbed brass forward pipes that hold the 3/8” ramrod in position. The ramrod is fitted with an iron tip threaded to accept 10-32 accessories. The so-called serpentine sideplate is made of brass, and is retained by two lock bolts and a rear screw, inlet flush with the side panel. See Colonial Frontier Guns, by T. M. Fast ignition is provided by the left hand large Siler flintlock, finished brown to match the barrel. The lock has a very strong mainspring, to throw sparks well. We recommend our best English 3/4" gun flint, #FLINT-ENG-6. Order a dozen flints to serve your gun. The stainless steel vent liner is positioned just slightly forward of the center of the pan, and placed well above the pan to provide for fast ignition. The two finger trigger is surrounded by the large triggerguard that easily accepts a gloved finger.
