This nice used Kodiak Express rifle is stocked in walnut with a checkered wrist and forearm. The stock is fitted with a blued steel pistol grip triggerguard, found only on a few early examples of these rifles. The blued steel barrels are 28" long rifled in .53 caliber for a .520" diameter ball. Locks are finished bright with taller hammers than later rifles. Manufactured by Davide Pedersoli & Co. of Italy.
The .53 caliber double rifle has blued 28" barrels. The bores are rifled with a slow twist for a round ball. The right hand bore is mostly bright with some scatter dark patches, a small amount of roughness is noted with a cleaning patch on this barrel. The left barrel is bright and clean. The elevated front sight ramp is mounted to the rib, fitted with a red fiber optic bead. Two folding leaf rear sights are mounted at the breech. Each rear sight is individually adjustable for elevation and windage.
The stock is checkered at the wrist and the forend for a secure grip. The blued steel buttplate is wide and flat to spread the recoil from full loads. The stock is fitted with a blued steel pistol grip triggerguard, found only on a few early examples of these rifles. A single wedge key retains the barrel. The wedge key allows you to quickly dismount the hooked breech for easy cleaning, without risk of wetting the stock.
The 13-1/2" and 14-1/4" length of pull should fit today's average man size shooter. This double rifle weighs 9.6 pounds and is fitted with sling swivel mounts.
The right hand side of the buttplate heel has a lifted chip from the wood drawing down against the buttplate over time. The long tang is engraved and polished bright. The rear two screws are properly spaced to accept our Creedmoor Vernier 3" tang sight. However, most hunters prefer the open sights as issued, when hunting big game. The breech end of the double barrel assembly does have some handling marks and small scuffs in the finish across both barrels and upper rib.
The rib is fitted with two (2) adjustable folding leaf sights, one for each barrel. The red fiber optic bead front sight is mounted to a elevated ramp.
The rear sling swivel stud is securely mounted in the buttstock, while the forward swivel is mounted to the middle ramrod pipe. A oval initial plate is mounted above the rear swivel stud.
The triggerguard is polished and blued steel, mounted to an armory bright trigger plate for the two triggers. The trigger plate is factory engraved.
The Pedersoli Express Rifle bar locks are finished bright with blued steel screws. The lock plate has a few scattered speckles of brown patina from use. The hammers are taller, different from current production hammers. The breech is fitted with 1/4-28 stainless steel nipples.
The walnut buttstock is shaped with a large oval cheek piece. The buttstock has a number of handling marks and pressure dents from use and handling.
