This left hand halfstock English Sporting rifle is stocked in walnut with a light caramel color with darker lines of pattern. Fitted with a .50 caliber straight octagon barrel the rifle is trimmed in browned iron furniture with a L&R percussion lock mated to a drum and nipple. The rifle is fitted with a sling button and swivel stud for easy carrying in the field.
The 28" straight octagon barrel gives the rifle a modest weight without being overly muzzle heavy. The .50 caliber bore is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright and has been well maintained.
The walnut stock has a attractive color with darker lines of pattern visible. The butt is fitted with a tall flat shotgun style buttplate to spread the recoil from the .50 caliber bore over a large area. The stock is shaped with a pistol grip. The forend is fitted with a dark black forend cap to protect the end grain of the stock. The joint between the forend cap and stock has a visible spacer or glue joint between the wood and forend cap.
Trigger reach is 13-1/2" to fit a todays average size shooter. Weight is a modest 7 pounds so you can carry it all day long.
The buttplate is flat with no comb in modern style. The buttstock neatly tapers into the pistol grip. The barrel is fitted with a short straight tang.
The top flat of the barrel is fitted with rear sight is dovetailed 9-1/4" ahead of the breech. A low iron blade front sight is mounted 1-1/4" behind the muzzle.
The buttplate is shaped with a rounded toe. A brass sling swivel stud is mounted at the mid point of the toe. The forward swivel is correctly mounted to rest against the middle ramrod pipe. The pistol grip is fitted with a oval grip cap. The browned iron triggerguard is mounted to the triggerplate and secured with a screw on the grip rail.
The tapered ramrod is fitted with a iron tip with 8-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories.
The rifle is fitted with a L&R percussion lock with a drum and nipple. The lock is finished to a dark brown and decorated with a inset makers mark stamped
MK.
The trigger release is excellent, thanks to the optimum geometry of the highly leveraged English style trigger plate, with high pivot point.
A simple escutcheon surrounds each lock bolt. English Sporting Rifles are grand and elegant, never flashy or gaudy. The rear lock bolt has a slightly worn slot from a ill fitted screwdriver.
