This early Virginia fowler will be of great interest to French & Indian War era re-enactors, Revolutionary War era re-enactors, and primitive long hunters. Neatly hand finished the curly maple stock is trimmed in burnished brass furniture with hand engraved accents. The Getz 20 gauge barrel is finished to dark plum brown, and the Jim Chamber's English Fowler lock is polished armoury bright. The lock is signed by contemporary builder Alton LeRay. This fine fowler is new and unused.

The fancy 20 gauge smooth bore 46" octagon-to-round barrel was custom made by John Getz. The barrel has a .620" bore diameter, and the bore is bright and has been well maintained. The 46" tapered octagon to round barrel has 15" of octagon, and wedding band transition to round. The tapered round barrel narrows to a small waist and flares slightly at the muzzle.

Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit today's average size shooter. Weighing only 7.8 pounds, this long gun holds steady due to the modest weight of the octagon-to-round barrel.
The stock blends has many of the architectural features of an English military musket, and features of an American flint longrifle. The handsome military style buttplate is similar to those found on English officer's fusils and better English fowling guns. Stocked in curly maple, the gunmaker has stained and oil finished the wood to best reveal the color and figure. The attractive figure is visible from the muzzle to butt.
Shown in our top view, the comb of the buttplate is truly a English design. The buttplate comb is hand engraved with a decorative border and flower designs with a folk art style.

Look closely, and you may notice that the buttplate is not perfectly centered behind the tang. Rather it is very slightly offset from the right hand shooter's cheek. This feature is called cast-off, and it places the right hand shooter's eye directly behind the line of sight, making this gun instinctive to point and shoot.

Lock panels taper widest at the rear following the taper of the breech end of the barrel in early flint long gun fashion. The thumbnail tang of the breechplug is surrounded by a raised carved panel with a shell design. A silver thumbpiece is inlaid into the wrist.
The long baluster wrist runs to the toe. The brass triggerguard has an early 1750 era English "potted fern" finial. Such triggerguards can be found on a volunteer fusil's, officer's fusil, or a gentleman's fowling gun. The grip rail is nicely hand engraved with a decorative border, and the bow has a engraved flower design.

Study this view, and you can see how gracefully the slender forend blends into the tapered lock panels, and how the wrist flows to the buttplate. The forearm terminates in a bulbous swell similar to a contemporary British military musket at the ramrod entry pipe.

The barrel is served by a tapered ramrod. The hidden end of the ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded 10-32 to accept threaded accessories.
The large round faced English fowling gun lock, sometimes called a "Queen Anne" lock, dates from the 1730 to 1760 period, well after Anne's reign ended. Sometimes called a “James Barbar" lock, after that famous early London maker who signed his work. These early London style locks are often found on Colonial American long rifles and fowlers. This lock was assembled and tuned by Jim Chambers, one of America's most respected lock and gun makers. The lock is burnished bright, and hand engraved with a traditional engraving design found on many antique long guns. The curled trigger is pinned high, for best leverage, giving this lock a smooth easy trigger release.

.
Our rear view shows the classic brass sideplate, with chamfered edges. Two lock bolts engage the round faced lock. The lock bolts are neatly fitted with the slots aligned. No cheekpiece is typically found on fowling guns or military fusils.

Very well finished, the beauty of the gun is due to the classic shape, careful fitting of the parts, richly stained figured maple, and the choice of best quality parts throughout. Order this fine fowler today.
