Stocked in black walnut this French Type C fusil is correctly trimmed in brass, with decorative finials in high relief on most of the brass furniture. French fur traders introduced the Type C trade gun in Canada and the Northern United States. Simple, sturdy, it was made with many variations. The Type C fusil was the standard French trade gun until the French introduced the simplified Type D fusil, and were later ejected from Canada in 1763, after the British won the "French and Indian War".
The tapered octagon-to-round 42" barrel is .58 caliber rifled with a 1 in 56" twist for use with a tightly patched round ball. The bore is cut rifled with six deep radius grooves. The barrel has a octagon breech with a transition to sixteen flats with a double wedding band, at the transition to round. The barrel is finished armoury bright.
The Type C brass buttplate has a flaming urn finial in high relief, at the front of the comb. "Type C" is the modern typology designation for these early French trade fusils, which were more decorative than the later so-called "Type D" trade guns from Tulle, France. The long baluster wrist is a classic early feature of fusils and trade guns from Europe. The stock has a classic walnut brown tone. Lock panels are shaped with a raised molding and beaver tail finial. The carving has some roughness along the edge and accumulated finish.
The brass is polished bright with regular use should age to a dark olive patina. In fact with some handling marks, darkening around the lock panels this fowler would have the appearance of a well used antique.
The 14" trigger pull makes this very comfortable for the average size shooter, and the fusil weighs in at 8.3 pounds.
The comb of the buttplate is clearly shown in this top view. Inletting is still good with some small inletting gaps. The lock panels are shaped with a raised molding that continues around the rounded tang of the breech plug.
The barrel is finished armoury bright and with regular use it will age to a silvery gray patina. The barrel is fitted with a silver blade front sight mounted just behind the muzzle.
The attractive brass triggerguard is mounted with pins. Historically, screws were much more expensive and labor intensive to manufacture. The width of the early buttplate is shown as is the small swell in the buttstock just ahead of the buttplate.
Notice the attractive front finial of the triggerguard, which matches the buttplate. Later trade guns omitted such decorative touches.
The 3/8" diameter ramrod is mounted through three brass ramrod pipes. The round ramrod pipes are shaped with double rings on each end. The ramrod has no provisions for threaded accessories.
Notice the early 1680 to 1730 style French flint lock, with no pan bridle arm. The frizzen is supported by the large shouldered frizzen pivot screw. The face of the frizzen appears to be unmarked,. The lock is finished armoury bright. The lock plate is decorated with a engraved border on the cock and plate. The plate is signed
Mauberg ahead of the cock. We recommend using our
#FLINT-AMBER-7 7/8" French Amber flints for this rifle.
A stainless steel vent liner is positioned well above the bottom of the pan and centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay. Study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
The brass sideplate is the classic fancy floral scroll design found on Type C fusils. See the book
Colonial Frontier Guns #BOOK-CFG, sold separately, for nice photos of a fine original French Type C trade gun. A difficult sideplate to inlet it has a few minor inletting gaps.
Regular use and handling will give this flint rifle the well age patina of a antique. Stocked in black walnut and trimmed in brass furniture. The flint lock has a very strong mainspring, and should spark well. The bore is bright and clean.
