The Manual Exercise as Ordered by His Majesty in 1764
compiled and edited by Mark R. Tully
From Ballindalloch Press.
Just another drill manual? Far from it! This "new and improved" version of the 1764 Manual draws on additional primary sources in an attempt to clarify and standardize the basic drill used by 18th-century armies during the American War for Independence. The basic positions needed for priming, loading, firing and facing are clearly reproduced -- many with additional explanations. Additional material is also included for "motions commonly practiced but not in the manual," plus there are illustrated notes on the proper distances of ranks and files, military steps and cadences, wheeling, the oblique step and musket nomenclature. Primary source documentation is cited throughout and a bibliography is included.
"The Sixty-Four" was practiced by British troops throughout the period of the American War for Independence, and nearly all reenactors portraying AWI period Crown forces today use this drill. In addition, there is very little difference between the '64 and that introduced by Baron von Steuben for the use of the Continental Army, so reenactors portraying Congressional forces will also find this book useful.
This edition is printed on creamy laid paper so it looks similar to 18th century publications. Along with the period styling and British royal arms on the cover, this makes it a nice looking manual to use in the field. Revolutionary War reenactors will find it a most useful resource whether they are beginners or experienced.
