AAH-747 Southern Mountain Longrifle, .45 Green Mountain 42" barrel, Siler flint, maple, patina finished iron trim, by Randy Jernigan . . . $1,319.00
   In Stock, for immediate shipment

This Southern Mountain longrifle has a slender graceful appearance. Stocked in plain maple and trimmed in patina finished iron furniture. Unsigned this rifle is attributed to Randy Jernigan.

The Green Mountain cut rifled barrel measures a full 42" by 13/16" octagon. Rifled with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 60" twist for patched round ball. Green Mountain barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. We recommend our .440" pure lead round ball, patched with .017" Ox-Yoke ticking, lubricated with our Mink Oil patch grease, or other animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy.

The maple stock is stained to a golden brown. Maple is a correct choice for stock wood, known to be found on original Tennessee rifles. The stock has a few small handling marks, and really seems to need some additional marks to match the patina finish on the lock, barrel, and furniture. The buttplate is shaped of appear as two pieces forged together with a copper rivet securing it through the heel.

Weighing in at 7 pounds the rifle has a trigger reach of 13-3/4 inches and is well suited for today’s average size shooter.

From above, the long lollipop tang of the breech is mounted with a tang bolt and a wood screw. The tang bolt is securely mounted to the triggerplate below. All the furniture is aged to a speckled gray, and the barrel clearly displays the alternating bands of light and dark gray to simulate a skelp welded barrel.

A flat rear sight, with square notch, is located 8-3/4" forward of the breech, a corresponding nickel silver blade front sight is set 1-1/4" behind the muzzle.

Our bottom view of the rifle shows off the iron toeplate and triggerguard that have been installed on the gun. Held in place by two small screws the toeplate protects that delicate area where the base of the stock meets the buttplate. Commonly in contact with the ground during loading and cleaning, the toe is subject to occasional damage and a toeplate helps to prevent that.

Continuing forward along the base of the stock one comes to the iron triggerguard. A pins hold the front while a wood screw secures the rear of this petite guard in place. Finished to a smooth silvery gray patina.

Out of the picture the 3/8 inch wooden ramrod is held in place by three ramrod pipes, two forward and one entry. The iron pipes are formed from sheet stock. The 5/16" diameter ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 accessories. Additionally an iron muzzlecap has been fit to the rifle to protect the end grain of the wood, much like the buttplate has been installed at the opposite end.

Ignition for the rifle is provided by a small Siler lock. The lock has been finished a smooth mottled gray finish to match the barrel and furniture. The lock plate is stamped Jernigan which is partially obscured by the flint cock. We recommend our 5/8" knapped English Tom Fuller flints for this lock. The stainless vent liner is perfectly positioned.

Below the lock a set of double lever, double set triggers have been installed. Properly tuned to fire set or unset, the triggers may be set before or after cocking the lock. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. But the set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

A single lock bolts passes through a iron sideplate and retains the small Siler flint lock opposite. The sideplate is finished flush with the side panel.

Used, this rifle has a few small handling marks in the stock. This slender longrifle points easily without being overly muzzle heavy thanks to the 13/16" octagon .45 caliber barrel. Order it today!
